LIL’ MAMA IN ANGELIC PRETTY SWEET LOLITA: TEEN CHOICE AND BET AWARD SHOWS.

Lil Mama in Angelic Pretty at Teen Choice Awards 2008. Japanese Sweet Lolita pink blouse worn by rapper.

I stumbled to my computer this morning, groggy as normal (I’m a nightowl) – but an email from reader Chelsea woke me right up. She writes: “I don’t know if you have already seen this, but i thought you would share in my horror/amusement… what to expect if Lolita transitions to highstreet fashion.”

Indeed I laughed. Chelsea sent me a photo of rapper Lil’ Mama at the 2008 Teen Choice Awards – and yes, she’s wearing a big pink bow and ruffled blouse by Japanese Sweet Lolita brand Angelic Pretty. Not surprisingly, her “mash-up” outfit has provoked strong reactions – and I’m certainly interested to hear your thoughts. Ready for mine? Hold on to your pretentious caps!

We’ll start with Plato’s Republic. I won’t go too far into the allegory of the cave – but in brief, Plato posits that our existence consists of two parts: the uncertain, visible world (which relies on our senses and is in constant flux) and the unchanging, intelligible world (the abstract definitions that are the products of human reason).

The intelligible world houses the “Forms,” or the enduring ideas of things. Take the Form of “Lolita-ness.” Like h.NAOTO says, the style has multiple vague subcategories – but the idea of a Lolita itself never changes. If I say the L-word, you’ll probably picture Mana in rocking-horse shoes, white ruffle knee socks, a black bell-skirted dress over a ruffled white blouse, and hair in two piles on the head, topped by a big bow or little hat or mini-crown.

But we live in a physical world of ever-changing manifestations: just look at the Gothlolis of the Week who inject individual flair into their Lolita-ness. And so, we have people wearing Angelic Pretty who aren’t Japanese, who do guro and wa variations… and we have Lil’ Mama.

Some people think that if one wears Lolita clothing, one must strive to replicate the Form as closely as possible. In the most extreme quarters, any look that deviates from the so-called ideal is instantly trashed. My own view is to recognize and respect the Form, but judge the deviation on its own merits. Shouldn’t fashion be about fun personal expression, rather than rules and codes? Consider the words of The Fashion Ramone:

“The world of fashion, which for being about people who likes showing off their superficiality and hedonism via clothes always serves as a calculator of liberty in any city, is lamentably the fucking community of passive consumers par excellence from Tokyo. The distinct groups like Gothic Lolitas, Ganguro, Gyaru, Kawaii and other homogeneous the only thing they do is repeating theirselves, and perhaps they dont even need to buy more clothes already. The properly called fashionistas, are just the same bullshit: or they are mere copy of the magazines, or they are fucking layers and layers of expensive clothes.”

I’m all about painting my teeth black and wearing a Rococo sailboat on my head. Yes, these looks are ridiculous and don’t always resemble the Goth Loli Form – but how about judging them instead on whether they’re interesting to the eye?

Lil Mama in Angelic Pretty sweet lolita dress at BET Awards 2008. Rapper in Japanese street clothing, award show lolita fashion.

Which brings us back to Lil’ Mama. I don’t think her first look works – not because I’m holding her up against the Angelic Pretty models, but because of the lank hair, unimpressive makeup, clashing nailpolish… her jeans and visible pink bra don’t help matters either.

This isn’t the first time Lil’ Mama wore Angelic Pretty on the red carpet; she wore a Fruits Basket apron as as dress to the BET Awards (above). You can pooh-pooh her sneakers, sports bra, and hoop earrings as violations of the Form – but I think she pulls off a fun look. The rapper isn’t trying to imitate the Sweet Lolita Form (as epitomized in the upper right photo). Rather, she’s infusing her hip hop attitude into a piece of clothing – and I bet she’s having a good laugh in the meantime. You can say Lil’ Mama looks ridiculous – she does – but is she any goofier than the ideal “golly-gee” model in pink hair?

I’m certainly awake now, and looking forward to your reactions. Hope you’re all having a fun weekend!

I think I appreciate the blouse paired with jeans more than the sport bra paired with the jumper. I do believe there is room for person touches and variations with lolita fashion but for me there is definitely something lacking. Despite that I would never personally wear either version is such a manner both looks still feel incomplete, especially for an awards show. I'm not sure I could explain how but there just feels like there is something missing that could finish off the look she is going for (good or bad). Maybe a different hairstyle? On a personal note…I don't think she should wear the gaint headbow. I find few people can really pull them off though.

  • http://kagitsune.deviantart.com kagitsune

I think she look absolutely terrible in her latest attempt (the pink blouse), but her first one was fun. She certainly isn't lolita, and the sports bra has got to go (preferably replaced with at least a tee-shirt), but the sneakers were awesome. And yes, Angelic Pretty's models do look like candy-coated clowns. xD

  • Mmy

This is why I love you, La Carmina. I had the same reaction, albeit sans the Plato, when I saw the BET outfit weeks ago. It's FUN; why does no one get this? Particularly since Lil' Mama's stated ideals of personal empowerment and being girly without being sexy can mesh quite well with lolita. It isn't the Lolita Form, but the BET outfit, at least, is a very cute form; she has a matching sister, how much more adorable could they become? I may not love the coordination in the Teen Choice Awards outfit, but it's still so much more cutesy and individual than most celebrity outfits. I, for one, admire Lil' Mama, and am a little proud that she's worn some interpretations of my chosen aesthetic.

  • http://candy-scrapbook.blogspot.com/ chelsea

Glad you enjoyed this look as much as when I laid my eyes on it. I had not seen her previous venture into this style, and have to say i do not mind it as much (this may be something to do with the fact i am looking at it directly after the pink ensemble, but it does sort of flow with her own style mixed in). I think the reason the recent picture looks so awkward is the fact that it is a completely different outfit from the waist down, but hey, if nothing else it is a talking point.

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

    That's an attitude I admire :)

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

hahah yes, whether it works or is an epic fail, I say fashion *should* be about pushing buttons and creating talking points…

  • http://lacarmina.com 櫻花 Lolita 社會

I like the fact that someone knows what the fashion is but it's not just some fashion trend. Truthfully her in the JSK is an insult to being lolita!

  • http://lacarmina.com em

I just read 5 seconds of your blog and you're amazing. I'll keep reading woot woot!

  • http://lacarmina.com ☆emobi!☆

the top attempt, i agree is bad. i really do like how you went against the “lolita snobs” out there who gag at a variant. it really is too large of a fashion.

but if she was going for “elegant” in EGL, i think she fell a little short. But i think her daughter wanted her to have a matching dress!!!

  • http://lacarmina.com SugaPill

When I first saw this I was in total shock b/c i had no idea that she knew what lolita even was nor did I know she knew about Angelic Pretty. Actually I like being surprised like this, it makes my day somewhat interesting. It also lets me know that more and more people are being open minded about things and fashion…even though they wear it the “wrong” way or a “certain” way. I mean yea she looks kind of odd but hey i'm just glad someone decided to step out of the box. know what i mean?

And I honestly don't think the blouse looks that bad w/ the jeans…its just the bow that throws me off alittle…or maybe its her hair..i dunno but its not that bad to look at. Now the sports bra and jumper thing has to go! lol if she wore a blouse under it i would have applauded her

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

I think I *have* been seeing a shift in attitudes too… there's been more open-mindedness or at least courtesy when people with different takes on the fashion.

Seems like the consensus is that the bow is a no. It's a hard look to pull of, for sure.

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

haha it reminds me of my long-suffering cat Basil Farrow, who I dress up to match me :)

  • suzushiina

I can totally appreciate where she was going with the concept, but she could've picked a different more flattering outfit. Outfit two was really cute. She's not trying to imitate it so I don't think there's anything to really debate about.

  • anon

    That's her sister.

  • Naka

the model with pink hair is so kawaii ^^

i like the dresses but tbh I dun really like how she clashes the 'elegant fashion'

  • http://lacarmina.com Louise

Yes, the bow is a big no. And that belt..uggghhh
The first outfit was some fun, though i didn't like the sneakers.

  • http://lacarmina.com Miyu

I think I threw up in my mouth, but when did you find out about lil mama looking so nasty! She ruined the clothing!

  • Jennifer

Although I believe that fashion is all about expressing oneself, to see something as beautiful and elegant as lolita worn like that breaks my heart. I love lolita because of it's innocence and modesty. If lolita becomes mainstream, I think it will loose its sweet aesthetic and become a sexual and perverse style.

  • http://myu-san.blogspot.com/ myusan

Hm…seen this before XD;; and my reactions were OMGosh. I'm not a lolita nazi at ALL, yet, looking at her makes me cringe. At least for the first picture, loose the bow. The jsk pics, look funky (not in a bad way) Her daughter (I pressume?) looks adorable tho, just love that curly fro and gingham bandana XD <333 That should be perhaps added on one of those beauty lolita mooks haha <3

  • http://lacarmina.com Cassy

You know, my problem with this has almost nothing to do with the fashion itself. When I look at her, my first thought is not “OMG wrecking my FASHION!!11one” but “Dayum she looks like a hot mess!” She didn't call herself lolita, and I doubt she really knows what it is.

I guess my biggest problem with this is:

Even wearing lolita clothing, she still manages to look like a hoochie.

  • http://lacarmina.com Madelaine

    Dear Miss Yuen,

I think your friend “Chelsea” is right, I did see the female hip-hop & R&B artist Lil' Mama wearing some sort of sweet lolita outfit. I think it's kinda cool to see someone wearing it like that. I see the picture of her wearing the bow and top. I think it might be popular for some to wear it like that. This is the new millenium of 2008 this year. ^________^

I think it's what we could call “Modern Lolita”, an other class of lolita who mix traditional way of wearing lolita clothes and modern way of wearing it. There's plenty of modern lolita, with for example, a T-shirt, a pair of Converse and a frilled skirt typical of gothic/sweet-lolita.
To be honnest, I think the first look is ugly, it's not going together well.
But the second one is really good and I like it, it really does like Modern lolita. In a way, it's the perfect opportunity to wear lolita clothes everyday, mixed with casual clothes.
I think it's not really interesting to wear always the same dress that every lolita have and to wear it in the same way (with the same accessories). I don't care about “rules” that some fanatics made. We should be original and unique, no one is allowed to say us what to do, what to wear and not to. We should make our one lolita way.
That's why I'm not shocking when I see people mixing different style.

That's what fashion is. Creation, imagination, and originality.

(Sorry for my bad english, I don't know if i'm very clear)

  • ka-san

wow real critical much. plus, lil mama is unique. she took an amazing fashion form, and added her own personal favor to make it fit her. duh

  • haruko

    ew

  • Anon

Modern lolita? It's wearing casual except wearing a frilly shirt.

  • A Real Lolita

Hey Tranny. Fruits Basket is an anime. Fruits PARLOR is the name of the jsk in the second set of pictures.

And you call yourself lolita. Fucking idiot.

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

Oh dear, and I always mix up peaches and nectarines. Epic fail I am.

  • http://lacarmina.com Somnium

    I saw this a few days ago on the net as well and my reaction was like —> -_-;;;;;;;;

Not because I'm a supposed Lolita die-hard who follows every strict rule and hide behind an invisible Bible of Loliness >_>

It's just that I have issues with people and their clothes. And I dislike the so called “fashionistas”. Who use bits and pieces of every style just to look hip and so “10 years later that joooo”. And end up looking like a monkey's ass >_>.

I highly doubt whether the above mentiones artist even knows what's the notion between Angelic Pretty, or even which country does it come from…but she wears it like someone would wave a flag “woohoooo I'm being original”. Artists do have this “right” because they “are feimuss”, making our eyes suffer from time to time. That's the reason i never switch on the TV XD

I dread the day that Lolita will be sold as the latest hot stuff by expensive Western brands. We've all seen it's already starting to become reality…Every subculture's been a fashion in the past, which got the spotlight at some point , worn by everybody and their dogs and thrown to the trash some years after. Lolita can't be an exception I'm afraid.

  • http://silkandleather.blogspot.com aziza

You said you dread the day Lolita is sold as the latest hotstuff by Western brands. I don't see how that's any different from how it is in Japan. In Japan it's sold as hot stuff, that's why things are often so expensive. I don't see why it should be sold there as hotstuff and not in the US. Is it so that Lolitas will be seen as unique in the US? I doubt the average native to Japan blinks when they run into a Lolita. The style in and of itself is not exceptionally unique, it's how people wear it that makes it unique. And that would be the same if the fashion were to really take root in the US.

  • Alucardalina Claire

Well, since no one is apparently going to disagree, I will.
You apparently stereotype lolita's, as will part of the world, however now the first things their minds shoot to is a rapper. Lolita certainly is not meant for western fashion, especially someone who will just spread it dilly-dally until it becomes so disguisting that even as EGL, I would drop my wardrobe.
When you are talking about Lolita, you are referring to EGL, however, you must have a full wardrobe of many different pieces. We don't wear the same thing over and over, just like you may wear the same jeans once a week, we may wear the same blouse once a week, or maybe the same petticoat for a half a week. Gothic Lolita is an experimental lolita where anyone can do just about anything to the fashion, which is why it's considered ruddy by the EGLs. However, once you step out of the rules of lolita in general, you find people likes these, who are not to be even compared to lolita in a fashion sense but lolita in the sense that it means slut.
That's exactly what she's portraying to the community: I let my bra show through clothes that originally were supposed to look sweet and innocent because I'm really a slut underneath it all.
We obviously think it's fun to follow the rules and codes of the fashion, or we wouldn't be following them at all. Had that never crossed your mind? There is a part of society out there who needs to follow rules upon rules to meet the requirements of their own personal will.

There are many flaws in your opinion, but I respect it as an opinion, as I hope you will respect mine as merely an opinion that will have flaws in it.

  • http://scienceforfood.blogspot.com Mimi

I thought it was awesome. Fashion is about having fun and twisting things your way, and she did just that. She isn't trying to be loli or ghettofabulous, she is being a very young girl having fun. She is being Lil' Mama… and honestly, I am of the firm belief that chucks work with everything.

  • Sarah

I think she is a disgrace to the whole Lolita community! I am very interested in Lolita fashion and have been for years,
this is just so horrid that shes tarnishing the look by exposing to much skin and sexuality.
Lolita is supposed to be a VERY modest style and she fucking with it. I dont like it. ]:

  • shiipan

    It's Fruit's Parlor. Fruits Basket is a manga/anime franchise.

  • shiipan

She doesn't seem to be trying to wear lolita. She's just wearing a piece from a brand that happens to make lolita clothes.

  • D:

this is gross and makes me uncomfortable.

  • Lauren

Oh my God! That is serously bad! Sopmebody should slap her and let her know that there are no hoopy earings and hideous sneakers to the lolita fashion and no showing skin! Damn I'm pissed. It's the picture above that make the common man and woman think we lolita's, kodona's and aristrocrats a bunch of sluts looking for sex. Ever been to Avant Gauche? They have a link to Lolitafashion.org that lays down the rules of the Lolita Fashion. It's all a violation of the style. This fashion isn't met for your dogs and to be thrown away. Sneakers, hoopy earings, and showing skin is what Humbert Humbert would love! Mybe it's best we lolitas stay an underground subculture in America. Oh and did you know that Baby, the Stars Bright is coming to San Fransisco?

  • Mina

Gahhh an insult to lolita fashion! Seriously, a sports bra? I'm just going to shoot myself now…

  • SimpleAnatopism

Hehe, I can't believe I never found this before now. XD

What people need to realise is that the point is not that she is 'omg not rori!!'. The point is that she is a rapper wearing Angelic Pretty.
I myself am a lover of hip-hop, and I also happen to love Victorian dresses and frilly blouses. Doesn't sound quite like the typical 'hip-hop dude' stereotype, does it? Though I strongly dislike the brand of pop-rap that Lil Mama chooses to participate in… Men in pop hip-hop almost always posess the 'gangsta' image, and women in the same industry are usually portayed as sluts and ho's wearing next to nothing. Lil Mama, a rapper in said industry, whose music matches the mainstream hip-hop form, comes out in a frilly pink dress. Challenges the status-quo, doesn't it? I admire her for that.

  • Crissy

I agree with the comment above. She never said she was lolita, she just took some of the clothes and mixed them with her regular clothing. So big deal, shes taking a few pieces of fashion and wearing it. Shouldn't she have a right to be unique and wear what she wants. And yes, it does stop the stereotype of hip-hop in its tracks. I think she is gutsy and awesome to just be herself. Kudos to her for doing it

  • Crissy

And by the way, wearing a sports bra does not make you look like a slut. At least she's covering it with the blouse. I see some people who wear sports bras without anything over them.

  • hip hop clothing

a superb one,i really indeed enjoy seeing those dress.they are very colorful and vibrant,it seems like a fairytale when viewing it

  • marionette desu~

God NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! TT______TT ruined. so ruined

  • eggmelia

Ok, I know this is an old blog post, but just thought I'd put in my two cents. I'm a lolita, and I think she wore the jumper skirt well.

And now, let's remember- clothes are clothes, individual articles of clothing are meant to be coordinated with other individual articles of clothing. If you only pair things up with stuff from the same brand or genre, how is it your own? You end up just looking like a mannequin- not to mention, pictures taken by the brand, like the one of the model with pink hair- are ADVERTISEMENT, so of course they're all going to look exactly alike. If you're just going to dress up the way they look, you might as well be cosplaying. Fashion is as much inspiration and creativity as it is brand loyalty.

Anyhow, I would've figured someone who was “A Real Lolita”^ would be a lot sweeter. I guess I'm an f'ing idiot, myself.
