MISA AMANE FROM DEATH NOTE: KAWAII GOTHIC LOLITA?

Misa Amane from Death Note manga and anime. Misa Misa cosplay, cute Japanese Gothic Lolita drawing, wallpaper.

Ronan and Basil Farrow and I have been watching the thrilling anime series Death Note. I bet many of you are already fans; I love the central concept of the notebook and the intellectual clashes between the characters. As Ronan puts it, “It’s a really vicious show sometimes, so it ends up killing off people you don’t expect or want. I like fiction that isn’t afraid to give you a depressing, nihilistic kick in the balls.”

However, there is a character that we find a tad grating… Misa Amane, the blonde actress/model/idol who will do anything for the main character. (She throws herself at his feet and declares, “I don’t care if you just use me!”) Misa is one of those squealing, bodalicious kawaii girls that we love to dissect on this blog. And here’s the monkey wrench: she’s almost always depicted in Goth clothing, or (as in the video below), Gothic Lolita.

According to Wikipedia, the creators Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata dressed her in Gothloli to complement the themes of the morbid notebook and death gods. Ohba said that he is “into that fashion” and that having Misa first appear in unusual clothing would be “more interesting.” The creators believed that using “hardcore” Gothic Lolita would be “too much.” – so they made her look “a little more natural” and “cute” to appeal to people who “weren’t into the Gothic Lolita style.”

I wonder if I’d be less bothered by Misa if she wore skimpy pink clothing… what are your thoughts?

Clearly I dislike her, simply because she is anoying, her personality doesn't fit at ALL the goth loli style… it's really… bottering me

Misa makes me cringe most of the time. As much as I despised Light, I did wish that he had a partner in crime who was as diabolical as he was. Misa really offers nothing more than her Shinigami eyes.

Hmm honestly, I didn't really like Misa. Maybe because I ended up having to watch it in English(because while I was watching it in Japanese, the series got licensed.. and deleted where I was watching it.. >_< ), so her voice was horrible.. And she was always so whiny and nagging.. and kinda hoe-y. XD I think her clothes might be pretty revealing for a Gothic Lolita… And.. *ahem* I know I said I don't like Misa, but.. yes, my display picture is a very crappy 5 minute Misa cosplay that my friend made me do for Halloween.. XDD

I personally dont mind amane misa much, her ero-loli outfits are definitely a refreshing change to the ever so conservative lolitas. not that i personally mind lolitas, I just think its a refreshing change to see her outfit since it has heavy influences of punk-rock to it and yet she still remains, cute? I doubt that'd be the right word to describe it.

The gothic lolita style seems to lend Misa too much grace. Although that might just be westerner perspective. Perhaps to the general audience to wear gothic lolita in public seems very bold and shameless and therefore correlates with Misa's shameless willingness to conspire to murder and openly desire complete submission to Light.

I actually liked Misa's style a lot, and I did feel it fit with the overall feeling of the series. I was a little disappointed by her characterization, because she started out with some promise and being very crafty in how she contacted Kira. But then she totally lost it when she met him face to face. So I guess mostly I was let down because I had this expectation that there would be this three way war, but her role was really simplified.

tl;dr That aside, in a purely aesthetic sense, I've always liked her character design.

I hate how she speaks about herself in third person and tries to be overly adorable all the time. Honestly I was disappointed in her personality and behaviour too, because the clothes and shinigami thing were quite promising. I don't see how a girl like her would ever come accross anything even remotely gothic…
However, I'm sure that she was intended to be as annoying as she is. In some ways, she does seem like a parody of the entire “kawaii” culture, particularly because many of the other characters, especially Light, seem to find her EXTREMELY stupid, unlike some of the stronger female characters. Maybe Misa was intended as a “comic relief”?

*sigh*.. It's posts like this that make me wonder if I even want to continue reading this blog..

Your clothes do not dictate your behavior or personality. -__- Heaven forbid someone just like the way something looks and want to wear it. I don't believe ANY clothing requires a certain personality to be worn and enjoyed. And I believe it's plain ignorance to think otherwise.

Clothes do in a way dictate your behaviour. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but many people dress the way they do to express who they are and perhaps find others who are similar. I think it's rare to come across a real life girl who dresses like Misa and has the same personality, not because the fashion is “above” Misa, but because it doesn't suit her personality; I don't think the clothes “choose the personality”, rather the personality chooses the clothes, and I don't personally believe that a girl like Misa would every choose to dress gothic.
It doesn't require a certain personality to wear something… but usually personality and clothing go along. They don't absolutely HAVE to, they just usually do.

I think it's important to note that the Japanese don't entirely view lolita in the same way that Westerners do – like with most subculture fashion styles, we in the West have a tendency to put a face to it, a personality. Goths are supposed to be doom and gloom, gothic lolita's utter ladies, etc etc. All we're doing with that is labeling, which is a very limiting thing to do. Like most people, I have a multi-faceted personality, I dress goth and gothic lolita, and though I do love to adhere to a Victorian lady's set of codes, I'm not afraid to jump fences in my frills and bloomers or laugh with the boys at a naughty joke. Life is more about having fun and dressing in clothing that you love than trying to fit into a certain category due to your clothes. To the subject, I like Misa, and I think it's in part due to her clothing. I give her major kudos for her love and devotion. Would any of you be so supportive? I wouldn't myself. If she were to be in 'normal' clothing, I probably would not like her as much, but I'd still respect her character. As for Light, he really didn't deserve Misa (or any woman, for that matter). I can also say with reasonable certainty that he's either sterile or gay (honestly, all the women that are thrown at him and he doesn't seem into any of them). :P Needless to say, I am guilty of being an L fangirl – mostly due to reading 'Death Note: Another Note', which has also given depth to Misora Naomi, who is a great character. Highly recommend reading that!

while I agree that her charrie is a tad whiny I still like her. the dark side in her that most folks miss (due to the whining I suspect). the whole devotion thing really comes to down to her kinda being stalkerish which to me makes her fit in that much more. the whole story is dark and disturbing and totally appealing. I'm a huge fan obviously. and like you said earlier part of the reason why is because it goes places a lot of other anime isn't willing to with the charries.

as to her style, well I just love it. especially the wardrobe from the live action. I think they've done a really good job on the movies thus far. also for those who don't know, there is about to be another live action centering around L released in the States. I will be posting about it in one of my group forums but you can also find more here http://www. deathnotefilms. com/

and yes fans can definitely effect how much enjoyment I get out things but honestly people who spoil things cuz they can't keep quiet are worse to me than the fangirls/boys. squealing and gushing I can mostly ignore but ruining an SL for me before I even get to it is just irritating (yes that has happened).

From my experience, Misa is the closest to Lolita most anime fans usually get. Although to me she's a crossbreed of western goth and Gothic Lolita (the maid-like kind), anime fans usually view her as the personification of the term “Lolita”, which is totally untrue of course for many reasons.

Yet it all comes down to one thing: every loliable outfit becomes “Misa” in their eyes. Whenever I organise a Japanese party over here, I'm kinda having a hard time, explaining that I'm NOT dressed as Misa and that the style is NOT cosplay, but my everyday dressup clothes. T_T

On the other hand, girls develop the false impression that doing their hair in lousy bunches and wearing skimpy ,punky outfits with an A-line skirt, striped socks and All-stars, instantly qualifies for “Misa cosplay” or “harajuku style” (in the cases that the term/notion of “lolita” is unknown ).

Of course we can't blame the poor anime character for this confusion, but the illiteracy of fans instead. So get a little more educated , people! XD

Just for the record, I eventually did a Misa cosplay , to get it off my chest, since I'd been called that so many times *giggle*

I think that’s what I was getting at. Clothes of course do not correlate to any mandatory behavior, but they are a form of self-expression… and it does seem (at the very least) surprising to me that Misa dresses Gothic.

      • Nikki

They dictate your behavior in the way you wouldn’t lay down, legs spread eagled in a short skirt. They do not cause you to start acting non-ditzy if that is your natural behavior. And, if you are a ditzy person, that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy gothic and/or elegant clothing.

The problem here is that people are getting irritated and offended, even, by Misa wearing gothic lolita clothing because her personality doesn’t “fit the fashion.” But why must it? Why must the fashion have a set personality, anyway? And I don’t understand why anyone would get so bent out of shape about it. I find it perfectly believeable that a girl like Misa would wear gothic and I think it suits her nicely.

I greatly dislike this way of thinking. This “your personality needs to fit your clothes” BS. What do the people who think this way do when they meet someone who isn’t their stereotype? Lable them posers, other names, bash them behind their backs, or even to their face? Because what they’re wearing and how they think and act don’t match up to someone else’s idea? How do you think that would make someone feel?

I think when it comes to this type of thing people are just being way too judgmental. To turn it around, this “clothing = personality” thing is exactly why goths are labled as just a gloomy bunch obsessed with death, satan worshippers, freaks, delinquents, ect.

I could go on and on, but this thing is too tl;dr already. Also, just out of curiosity, what personality would you find likely to dress gothic? I wonder if I fit it.

I think that we just don’t like Misa, period. Even if she was wearing a pinstripe suit, or a frilly pink ensemble, I’d still dislike her because she’s irritating and stupid.
It feels like she wears Gothic Lolita as if it’s a costume. A lot of idols do that because it gets attention. I bet if you found her truthfully favourite outfit, it would be something completely different.

and yeah it is a bit sad that people thing Misa is true Loli but still folks have to start somewhere. and if she peaks their interest enough to dive deeper than I say it’s a good thing. I wish I got to wear the SPR she did from the film!

the movies are okay. But if you've seen the animated series before the movies, I don't think you're going to like them much.

They dictate your behavior in the way you wouldn't lay down, legs spread eagled in a short skirt. They do not cause you to start acting non-ditzy if that is your natural behavior. And, if you are a ditzy person, that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy gothic and/or elegant clothing.

The problem here is that people are getting irritated and offended, even, by Misa wearing gothic lolita clothing because her personality doesn't “fit the fashion.” But why must it? Why must the fashion have a set personality, anyway? And I don't understand why anyone would get so bent out of shape about it. I find it perfectly believeable that a girl like Misa would wear gothic and I think it suits her nicely.

I greatly dislike this way of thinking. This “your personality needs to fit your clothes” BS. What do the people who think this way do when they meet someone who isn't their stereotype? Lable them posers, other names, bash them behind their backs, or even to their face? Because what they're wearing and how they think and act don't match up to someone else's idea? How do you think that would make someone feel?

I think when it comes to this type of thing people are just being way too judgmental. To turn it around, this “clothing = personality” thing is exactly why goths are labled as just a gloomy bunch obsessed with death, satan worshippers, freaks, delinquents, ect.

I could go on and on, but this thing is too tl;dr already. Also, just out of curiosity, what personality would you find likely to dress gothic? I wonder if I fit it.

I think that we just don't like Misa, period. Even if she was wearing a pinstripe suit, or a frilly pink ensemble, I'd still dislike her because she's irritating and stupid.
It feels like she wears Gothic Lolita as if it's a costume. A lot of idols do that because it gets attention. I bet if you found her truthfully favourite outfit, it would be something completely different.

i have a love/hate relationship for misa's character. it seems that if she wore clothing which closer matched her annoying clingy girly personality as opposed to gothic lolita, then she would simply be the irritating comical stereotypical female element of the series. But by dressing in a gothic lolita style, i think it makes everyone sort of think twice about her. She IS horribly annoying, but its possible to see that there is more to her and that she occasionally has a bit of rough time (especially around the end of the series). The style definitley does not fit her but its sort of unique and prevents us from just tossing her aside as a 'bubblehead'..
sorry if that makes no sense!!
ps. no matter what light does…i can never dislike him XD

Personally, I like Misa. She's my second (maybe third) favorite Death Note character :) Also, it's thanks to her that I discovered gothic lolita. I had seen it before, of course, but I had no idea what it was or how to find out more about it. The only thing I don't like about her is how blind she is when it comes to Light. (and, for the record, she did wear a “skimpy pink” outfit in one chapter/episode… it was really weird O.O)

I admit – major Death Note fan. I love the goth theme that surrounds it. I loved Misa's clothing, but her personality irked me at times.
I wore my first loli outfit based on something she once wore.
Hope you end up loving the series :)

Misa is really cute, I also quite like her style.
I only wish she had more brains. And that Light would treat her better. (Although that is utterly impossible, since Light cares too much of being God to care about everything else).
But overall, Death Note is by far one of the best anime I've seen ;D

I never watch *any* anime (or read manga or play video games) so this is a new adventure for me. I’m thoroughly enjoying the plot twists, and the premise is grounded enough to keep me interested.

      Any other anime recommendations?

I love the Death Note live action movies, and just last night rewatched Death Note 2. Misa is obviously goth lolita (Hangry & Angry phone charms & dolls etc) but not dressed overly frilly like the anime seems to dress her. No I didn't like her either, but the character had to be subservient for the plot to work. I must watch the anime series now – it seems to go into character's motivations and conflicts more.

I LOVE L / Ken'ichi Matsuyama – he's incredibly charismatic and sexy. Even in Last Name, which wasn't as good a movie as the other 2, IMHO. I'm dying to see Detroit Metal City (the movie), cos he plays the lead! The little part he had in Nana just didn't do him justice :(

The live-action movies have a totally different tone in comparison to both the anime and manga. They’re very, very popcorn, but there’s a plot change that a lot of people find satisfying.

The third movie is total fanservice for people who like Matsu-ken as L, has an incredibly weak plot, tries to make L an action hero, etc etc. Really only worth seeing if you want to drool over the actor for two hours. (I think he’s cute, but his L is too flouncy in comparison to the animated character.)

Most decisions in DN, period, were made to drive the plot. Misa is “spontaneous and not too bright” solely because they needed a character who would make the “shinigami eyes” deal. The Japanese police are occasionally stupid because the plot requires them to be, in a way I can’t describe without major spoilers. Etc, etc, etc.

There's no way a person can take it upon themselves to tell everyone what to wear and be Gothic Lolita.

this is the 3rd one lol so far I've seen them all in theaters cuz I really try to support stuff when it comes to the States. the only problem with them is that they're dubbed and subbed. and the only plus in that is at least they used the anime cast members. still, its sooo much more smexy in Japanese ^-^

and yeah it is a bit sad that people thing Misa is true Loli but still folks have to start somewhere. and if she peaks their interest enough to dive deeper than I say it's a good thing. I wish I got to wear the SPR she did from the film!

Death Note is my fandom. =_=

Most people I know who watch the series find Misa intensely irritating until the five-year timeskip, after which they begin to feel more and more sorry for her. I have some compassion for her as a character because, while she’s annoying and not so bright and, er, a MASS MURDERER, she’s not doing it for glory (unlike Light and Kiyomi Takada). Her family was killed, and she consistently tries to replace them with Light, who is only using her; it’s sad that someone so famous and popular isn’t genuinely loved by anyone. She and Mikami are both pitiable figures.

Reactions from people who read the manga might be different simply based on the fact that they don’t have to hear a grating VA performance. (No insult meant to Misa’s various VAs: “grating” is a fair portrayal.)

You had a Japanese “Loli of the week” a while ago who, IIRC, did Misa cosplay — I remember commenting on her. She really did look like Misa come to life.
