SHIBUYA GIRLS COLLECTION FASHION SHOW: GYARU JAPANESE GAL STREET STYLE, BIG HAIR BOWS, TOKYO RUNWAY.

neon bright leggings, big giant bows in hair. Shibuya Girls collection, Tokyo girls fashion show, gyaru hairstyles and Japanese women's street clothing. Ganguro gal trendy style, Japanese teenage girl models.

Since we’re exploring other Tokyo style tribes this week, I thought you might enjoy photos from last March’s Shibuya Girls Collection. W. David Marx wrote an excellent essay about the runway show, with insights on consumer dynamics and tensions in gyaru (gal fashion). My thoughts: ooh, big hair bows! YES to neon pumps and mismatched tights!

The photos above are from the Dazzlin’ × Fanta collaboration, designed by ex-Popteen model Tsubasa Masukawa. I like the casual, fruit-burst fun of the collection, but was it really necessary for the models to hold fizzy soda bottles on the catwalk?

Hello Kitty fashion show, Shibuya Girls collection, Tokyo girls runway presentation, gyaru hairstyles and Japanese women's street clothing. Ganguro gal trendy style, Japanese teenage girl models.

Hello Kitty continues to take over the world (her MAC makeup line seems to be doing well). I don’t know about the Kitty-face slouch top, but I like the spotted tights and bow-tie choker (right).

Crazy Japanese schoolgirl fashion, riding crop, aerobics tights and leggings, leotards neon electro spandex. Shibuya Girls collection, Tokyo girls fashion show, gyaru hairstyles and Japanese women's street clothing. Ganguro gal makeup and hair, accessories, joker tights.

A recurring theme: 1980s aerobics-wear. You can view runway photos from the entire Shibuya Girls Collection here, and compare them to the Goth/Lolita/Punk designs from the Marui Fashion Expo.

Japanese Gal fashion isn’t really my speed, but I liked individual elements from the show – such as the Nintendo mushroom earrings (bottom left: look closely!) and diamond joker tights (bottom right). How about you?

Aren't gyarus and lolitas in Japan sort of against eachother, or is that just a myth?
One of the only store clerks that didn't go “irrashaimase” when I was in Japan was in a gyaru shop.
    I still cry myself to sleep… :(

I think part of that is just a myth. When people see two vastly different styles they assume that they are enemies of some sort. Gyaru is a rebel teenager that likes being sexy and having fun while lolita is an elegant princess. In Japan plenty of gyaru like lolita style and it shows up frequently in gal magazines, and lolita seems to be borrowing some styles from gyaru (i.e. decorated nails and bouffants). I think they influence each other but people will probably disagree with me.

I pretty much agree with that. It’s not a mods vs rockers type of dynamic, from my experience. The girls tend to have different interests, read different magazines, and gravitate towards different shopping areas (Shibuya 109 vs Marui/Laforet) – but absolutely, there’s a lot more fluidity between all the street styles than some forums would like to acknowledge… ;)

Hmm, the mismatched colours are awesome ^^ but for me to wear the outfits, maybe not… But i do like the black an white diamond stockings and black and pink socks, and the bow choker. ^^ hmm, the pink police hat's not too bad xDDD….. but im not much of a gyaru girl.

Right, there are bits of pieces that I absolutely love, but I wouldn’t wear the overall look…

I like the overall-type-thing the girl on the top left is wearing. If it were cuter and less revealing I might get it. By the way, I've been online window shopping and I've noticed how there are somethings I would consider expensive in the “super cheap sale” bin. Which brings up this question. what is considered cheap in Japan?

Cheap clothes in Japan aren’t quite as cheap as in Hong Kong, but still pretty cheap… especially in the dollar stores and bargain racks (Ikebukuro’s a great place for bargain clothes shopping).

DAISO is one of my favorite places on Earth for stick-on face accessories, fake eyelashes, nail art and other goodies. Everything is $1-3.

As for clothing… there are excellent deals from the no-name Harajuku stores. In the previous post, you can see that puffy skirts are $16. My Popples dress was $12. I’ve found tops at Closet Child for $8-15…

Some things I like – in fact, I like almost the entire outfit of the photo with the hello kitty face slouch sweater (which looks cute on her, but is not my style). So I like the heels, those style tights, the hats, and the poofy skirts but the 80's aerobics wear not so much. I guess I'm just not on the 80s retro-band wagon! haha Though the accessories are adorable and the giant bows make me happy (I've been obsessed lately with giant hair and giant hair accessories, unfortunately I've been having a lot of trouble getting my hair to be and stay giant! Maybe you have tips for that type of look?) I think a lolita/gyaru mixed style would be really adorable (and I would wear it, oh yes I would)! :)

I love the softer 80s nostalgia of Fairy Kei. The Jane Fonda Workout Look… not so much!

Back-combing works but is unfortunately damaging… I like to tie up tiny pieces of hair all over my head for a voluminous look. Like: http://lacarmina.com/2008/12/how-to-bl

    Anyone else have tips?

Well, the one thing you do not want to do is to use cat treats as a replacement for food. Cat treats should be used sparingly and as a special diamond kitty reward. If you give your kitty cat treats too often she may not want to eat her regular food and this is not a healthy plan.
