Actually it was more about thujone, the chemical in absinthe that supposedly causes the hallucinations. That's never been proven, but thujone does cause convulsions and delirium in large amounts (which is NOT the case for absinthe as previously thought... this may be a reason why it is no longer banned in the U.S.). The most interesting thing I learned was that Vicks Vaporub used to contain a little absinthe.
