VIDEO: LIVE CUTE COOKING DEMO ON NBC TODAY SHOW! CUTE YUMMY TIME BREAKFAST FOODS, EGG RECIPES FOR KIDS.

A new day, a new video: my NBC Weekend Today Show appearance! I talk about character bentos (charaben) in Japan and the healthy approach to cooking in my book Cute Yummy Time. Then I demonstrate two cute food demos, which turn a fried and hardboiled egg into chick critters! For behind-the-scenes photos of the 30 Rock Today Show studio, check out this post. I invite you to subscribe to my YouTube channel as I have more videos in the works!

I am making a head-to-toe cosplay outfit for my LA book signings at the end of November (event details here). While flipping through books at the fabric store, I did a double-take when I saw this “Harajuku Girls” Halloween pattern.

Harajuku Girls costume from Ricky's NYC, Simplicity pattern, cut and sew decora Lolita goth punk Tokyo fruits street style fashion, make clothing, patterns for Tokyo street clothes, Gothic Lolita Bible, cosplay DIY, costume makers, Halloween outfit

I also came across a pre-made Harajuku Girl costume at Ricky’s. The adult and child’s versions cost around $40.

Reaction? It’s a given that these are Halloween costumes for a general audience; I’m not surprised that they’re not very well executed. But my main response was that of marvel. Remember that very few people knew the word “Harajuku” five years ago. Now, most people can associate the word with a look (decora and Lolita, for the most part) and Japanese youth culture — to the point that it’s become a dress-up option for Halloween. This phenomenon is precisely what I was referring to in this Reader Question: you can’t predict what people will latch onto in even a few years from now… What are your thoughts?

    sooooo cool! SUPERSTAH!
  • Way to go! This is great. I think America needs some more cultural resources and cute Japan style bento food could really help kids stay healthy. ;) The idea with the patterns is great but they could use some work.Even I wonder if I'm following the style properly. Congrats!!
  • Thanks! Everything in the book uses healthy ingredients -- that was really important to me.
  • Would I be able to find Cute Yummy Time in a bookstore or it only available online? I'd like to buy a copy for my brother who likes cute food. Thanks! :)
  • Thank YOU! The book is available in all major bookstores; you can call or search online (such as Barnes and Noble, Borders, Chapters) to see if the store carries it. If not, you can order a copy. It's also available online at www.lacarmina.com/cookingcute.php

Thanks again!! I hope your brother enjoys it!
  • Awesome! I know he will, although I'm afraid I'll keep it for myself. ;)

    Thank you.

People seem to forget and are all like "Oh yeah that style is so Harajuku" Oh stfu -_-+ Stop talking out of your arse.
I hate it when people don't know what theyre talking about.
  • insideoutbanana
    my point exactly!
  • Jeff
    congratulations!!!
  • Jen
The patterns and costumes seem to be a result of someone interpreting Harajuku street fashion as one style; they're like a mash-up of Lolita, decora, raver, and even gyaru. They're not so different from my early attempts at street fashion so even if they're a bit of an eyesore, we all gotta start somewhere. (This is why doing research is important. Knowledge is power. ^_~)

Loved the Today Show segment. You were great!
  • Stillprince
I would not even think of considering those "costumes" as Harajuku, as they are tacky and poorly made, and too sexual sometimes. I also think it's a little annoying how they associate Harajuku with Gwen Stefani >_>+
  • insideoutbanana
ya! i would have to agree with this!! i hate how everybody thinks Gwen Stefani came up with "Harajuku" when most here stuff isnt even real harajuku...besides harajuku isnt really a style, is a place (go figure)
  • Kelly Kitsch

Oh my God! Carmen! How wonderful! I'm SO SO SO Proud of you! I brag about you to all of my students - you're such an inspiration, doll. There's so much more success in your future. Fantastic!
  • The patterns are cute, but i think the person who chose the "display" items somehow correlated Harajuka fashion with being colorblind and closing your eyes while picking out accessories. For those that make their own clothes, though I think it's good that patterns are (possibly?) beginning to become more accessible.
  • I think anything that promotes DIY is a good thing!
  • Loved the video--very cool. :)

The Halloween costumes are a bit scary...I feel like people miss the point when they try to mainstream the "Harajuku" look.
  • Missi_Moonshine
    I actually bought that pattern. >w<;
The pre-made costumes I'm never too fond of as they look tacky and cheap. But I actually thought that pattern was somewhat accurate in its representation. While I know there isn't a "formula" to dressing up like that, I still thought this was awesome, and bought it anyway.
Even if it is a child sized pattern, it was only 99 cents, so what the hell!

I actually woke up that morning, turned on the Today Show (I didn't know you were going to be on TV) and squealed when I saw you were going to be on! It made my day.
  • I also think it's something useful to work from -- and you can customize it however you like! I'm all for experimenting!

That's very cool that you saw my Today Show bit when it actually aired.
  • Nakayoshia
    omg this is great ^^

the hajauka pattern is over here yet T_T i might have to wait till next season D:
i guess i could order online

    congratulations aswell ^^
  • Simone D
