LIME CRIME LIPSTICK REVIEW, GOTH CUSTOM DRESS FROM GLOOMTH & PINK HAIR. TAXIDERMY MUSEUM PHOTOSHOOT BY DEREK CUTTING.

I’m happy to hear you liked the previous set of photos from this shoot! All photography is by the talented Derek Cutting, who shoots the Gloomth clothing catalog. Photos taken at the current taxidermy exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver — a must-see.

Finally, I got to swish around my new vampire cape. It’s by Japanese Goth brand Black Peace Now, nabbed from the top floor of Closet Child Harajuku. Fierce, ne?

An exhibit of dead animals is slightly morbid proposition, but the Museum of Vancouver’s presentation was tasteful and insightful. I loved the dangling sea creature jars and a re-created Victorian parlor. The displays included historical context; did you know birds of paradise were thought to be foot-less because they were originally sold with legs removed? I highly recommend that you catch the Ravishing Beasts collection; you can find more info here.

And say hello to my new favorite lipstick. Doe Deere’s makeup line, Lime Crime, specializes in bright colors you won’t see in mainstream stores. “D’Lilac” goes on smooth and opaque — no dreaded patches — and stayed on my lips. And it came in a silver and magenta unicorn tube: how adorable! (Photos here and here.) Out of all the lip colors I’ve worn, this is the shade that has gotten the most compliments. You can order these phenomenal lipsticks from Lime Crime’s website; they come in black, blue, purple, orange, you name it.

Now for a slight rant. Over the years, well-meaning folk have said to me, “Ya know, you’d look better if you kept things natural. You should leave your hair black and not wear such bright makeup. And maybe put on normal clothes.”
Apologies, but I’m not about to get a makeover (or makeunder)? I style myself in this way because I feel it’s most reflective of ME. And ever since I was a preteen, I’ve been captivated by alternative fashions (Goth, cyber, etc) — I love how they challenge expectations about what is beautiful. (Who says someone with half-shaved neon hair and piercings can’t be a stunner?) I love the experimental attitude of subculture styles; yes, some outfits crash and burn, but others will make you tilt your head and say “Wow.” I’d take these ups and downs over a universally lauded look any day. So I say carry on, alternative dressers! (What are your thoughts? Agree, disagree?)

Got some disco-dancing news… I’m returning to Tokyo this spring for a big, zany TV gig. I will spill the details soon. Who’s joining me?!??!?
Lastly, I’ve started Tweeting random funny incidents and quotes by friends; I hope you’re LOL-ing at this new direction. Add me on Twitter so you won’t miss the next rabies story!
