LIME CRIME LIPSTICK REVIEW, GOTH CUSTOM DRESS FROM GLOOMTH & PINK HAIR. TAXIDERMY MUSEUM PHOTOSHOOT BY DEREK CUTTING.

Taxidermy museum, sea creatures in jars, Victoriana vintage home decoration, Doe Deere lime crime makeup, alternative Goth dress shopping and clothing, light purple lipstick, lavender lipsticks from Lime Crime, Gloomth gothic lolita dress, black long lace gloves, Asian retro vintage girlie photos.

I’m happy to hear you liked the previous set of photos from this shoot! All photography is by the talented Derek Cutting, who shoots the Gloomth clothing catalog. Photos taken at the current taxidermy exhibit at the Museum of Vancouver — a must-see.

Finally, I got to swish around my new vampire cape. It’s by Japanese Goth brand Black Peace Now, nabbed from the top floor of Closet Child Harajuku. Fierce, ne?

Purple Goth dress: sent to me from Gloomth & the Cult of Melancholy
Cat scarf: from an accessories stall in Shimokitazawa; also sold in Banana Fish.
Long lace gloves: Spider
Yellow boots: John Fluevog
Victorian choker: sent to me from Yifat Aharoni
(FYI, I now have to declare every gift/promo item I receive according to the new FTC regulations for bloggers…)

An exhibit of dead animals is slightly morbid proposition, but the Museum of Vancouver’s presentation was tasteful and insightful. I loved the dangling sea creature jars and a re-created Victorian parlor. The displays included historical context; did you know birds of paradise were thought to be foot-less because they were originally sold with legs removed? I highly recommend that you catch the Ravishing Beasts collection; you can find more info here.

And say hello to my new favorite lipstick. Doe Deere’s makeup line, Lime Crime, specializes in bright colors you won’t see in mainstream stores. “D’Lilac” goes on smooth and opaque — no dreaded patches — and stayed on my lips. And it came in a silver and magenta unicorn tube: how adorable! (Photos here and here.) Out of all the lip colors I’ve worn, this is the shade that has gotten the most compliments. You can order these phenomenal lipsticks from Lime Crime’s website; they come in black, blue, purple, orange, you name it.

Now for a slight rant. Over the years, well-meaning folk have said to me, “Ya know, you’d look better if you kept things natural. You should leave your hair black and not wear such bright makeup. And maybe put on normal clothes.”

Apologies, but I’m not about to get a makeover (or makeunder)? I style myself in this way because I feel it’s most reflective of ME. And ever since I was a preteen, I’ve been captivated by alternative fashions (Goth, cyber, etc) — I love how they challenge expectations about what is beautiful. (Who says someone with half-shaved neon hair and piercings can’t be a stunner?) I love the experimental attitude of subculture styles; yes, some outfits crash and burn, but others will make you tilt your head and say “Wow.” I’d take these ups and downs over a universally lauded look any day. So I say carry on, alternative dressers! (What are your thoughts? Agree, disagree?)

Got some disco-dancing news… I’m returning to Tokyo this spring for a big, zany TV gig. I will spill the details soon. Who’s joining me?!??!?

Lastly, I’ve started Tweeting random funny incidents and quotes by friends; I hope you’re LOL-ing at this new direction. Add me on Twitter so you won’t miss the next rabies story!

I agree with you! If you feel more comfortable in something “Strange”, then do it! I always get questions and strange looks, and when some of the giggling preppy girls come up to me asking “Why are you wearing THAT?” in a rude fashion, I always just smile and fire the question right back, although in a polite tone. It's amazing how many get stunned into silence and leave you be afterwards when you question their own clothing…

  • angeloftears

JEEZ! Does EVERYONE have to be an Abercrombie slave? I always get issues for my NATURAL hair colour- because it's black and my skin is very pale- and I like to add fun streaks. It's better to have fashion for yourself, you're not anyone's doll… that's why I recently cut off most of my hair, and it's fabulous! By the way, I would LOVE to go to Japan! Keep rocking the lilac lipstick and lovely dresses, you Victorian creep doll, you!

  • trashtastika

Well you know where *I* stand on the alternative fashion issue!! Dressing up is an aspect of creativity and a great way to express yourself, so as someone who is pretty 'out there' with brightly coloured hair, make-up, and alternative clothing, I say to everyone – give it a go! Try something new! How about a purple death-hawk? Or Siouxsie Sioux make-up sometime? I'd like to see you be even more out there with your look, if anything :) Love the cloak, BTW :)

Good for you. It takes guts to answer right back, and often it turns people around. I remember once I was walking down the street in a ridiculous poofy faux fur jacket. Some girls behind me were whispering “oh my god, how could she wear fur, it’s so cruel?” I turned around and said, “It’s fake. Fake. Wanna touch it?” Hahah!

      • Anonymous

It definitely does. Amazing work that you turned around and spoke to them. It’s so strange how they think that when they talk about someone they suddenly turn deaf… Oh well, it doesn’t bother me any more~ So long as I’m comfortable then I don’t care X3 Keep on wearing your awesome clothes and styles! You rock!

I’ve been streaking my hair since I was a teen — my private school wasn’t pleased, but oh well! Keep at it! I’ve found that not only the Abercrombie mainstream complains; there are “acceptable” alternative styles out there (ie, hipstery fashion bloggers) and anything outside is given the evil eye… gotta take a stand.

When I saw that vampire cape, I thought… ok, that’s mine. And it was. :)

  • Missi_Moonshine

I love the photos. It's interesting how something like taxidermy can be made into something tastefully morbid, and at the same time, incredibly beautiful. Love the idea. Also, I love the intense green!
About dressing in alternative fashions…I used to get the rant constantly when I was younger from my best friends mom. She loved me and thought I was a good kid, but she absolutely HATED that I dressed in all black, and she especially hated my Marilyn Manson t-shirts. Even today (I dress more lolita now then goth, but I still like to sport a romantic vampire look every once in a while) my boyfriends mother doesn't like the fact that I “dress like a little girl”.
Clothing is a way to express myself, and it always has been. Big skirts, dramatic tights, frilly blouses and copious accessories is what you'll always find me in. Even if I'm just going outside to take out the trash! I never let anyone's words discourage me. Like my mother always tells me, “You're a free spirit that no one can ever cage.”

  • lovingtokyofashion

I agree! I Love alot of fashions that aren't your average Jeans and t-shirt. Like Decora, Lolita and ect. all those are very lovely and out-of-the-box fashions that really expresses the creativity of the wearer ( did I spell that right?). Never change because some want you to ( unless it's an intervention with dangerous things, thats different) But be yourself and keep dressing in your amazing outfits!!!! goodjob for speaking out!

I definitely agree with the fashion comment. I grew up in the private school system, so it wasn't until college (when I was finally out of a uniform) that I had the ability to start experimenting with fashion. Just this past week I heard a few of my students commenting (somewhat harshly) about alternative fashions. Though, they have no clue about the circles I run with outside of teaching.

The funny thing about “mainstream” fashion is that it just depends on the channel you're introduced to. I adore alternative fashions, but that's because I was introduced to people over the years that expressed the beauty of them. Even when I was in high school–though I didn't completely “get” it–I had respect for those who were willing to test the limits. I don't think people realize how comfortable you truly have to be with yourself to be able to walk outside in whatever is you. It's such an admirable thing to be able to do.

  • Leathur Roxx

I agree with you also in regards to fashions and choosing to not conform to the banal and mediocre mainstream.
I just don't care what people think….considering the sources…..around me (at least here in Atlantic City New Jersey *yawn* are unimaginitive folks wearing “uniforms” of athletic gear, backward baseball caps, white tank tops,or gang banger attire. And they have the gall to make fun of ME.I often get one of 2 main critiques. The “Halloween is over” comment or the hooker comments. There is NO rock/alternas scene here, and I have to go to Philly or NYC for work…..needless to say they don't ask for Goth models in Frantic City.*smirk*
I was lucky to have moved to Los Angeles during the mid 80s,at the height of the heavy metal (hair metal) Sunset Strip days. That was paradise for me,and finally I felt like I belonged somewhere. And as you know, that s also a big Goth scene,so I became a fixture at such seminal clubs as Scream,The Fang Club, and glam/metal clubs like The Red Light District,The Cathouse, bars like the Rainbow Bar & Grill, and others.
Also,I got to live in San Francisco for half-years starting in the early-mid 90s.There I got to live a truly bohemian life.I actually squatted on Haight Street, and in the Castro, and Northbeach…..I was a dancer,a performance artist, and I read tarot cards and did stone healings for people to help suppor myself. And if one cannot be “real” in San Francisco then you aren't trying hard enough!

Thats why I love being bicoastal.I get to live wherever.Freedom is a wonderful thing even at the expense of lack of stability. Some day the money will come.

So yeah,it would help to be secure within oneself.I have always gotten that sense of security from within.I know I am composed of many different aspects, some more prominent than others, and I do my thing. And if folks like it groovy. If not theres the door,it can hit their backside;-)

Are you going to be on a Japanese gameshow? 8D Sounds fun, but I plan to go in the summer. I personally think the cape is good in that setting. Count Chocula and the Dead Beasts? Perfect. As for the people telling you to tone stuff down, I personally think you look good with the highlights. Make up is just a fun thing for the most part.

  • Lhene

Definitely agree with you. People who insist on trying to get you to conform to *their* standards are so irritating. Better to be expressive with your clothing than fit yourself into a vicious little clone of everyone else. And I've found that many of the people who conform are really unhappy with the way they look and end up with lives their not happy with, all because they condition themselves to follow the crowd. If you're not bold enough to even dress the way you want, how are you going to find the motivation to be what you want to be?

Beauty is better when it's an expression of yourself, not something you are told to be. (Like all those girls in highschool who have the same hair, makeup and clothes. Ick.)

Hahah! Not quite a gameshow, but something just as wacky… If you come in May, you might be able to be part of it :O

Makeup is fun, definitely! I don't wear strong colors all the time; haha since I work from home, I'm either in PJs with my cat or out with black lipstick… there's not really an in-between and that suits me fine. ;)

I find it difficult to indulge people purporting that such a thing as “normal” exists. We don't know what normal is because, so far as we know, this concept is entirely relative.

AGREE AGREE AGREE (about the subculture thing).
It's not that I dress that way a lot – I mean, probably my most extreme thing right now is the fact that I have Manic Panic's Purple Haze on the underside/bangs of my hair, and I've only recently started because now I'm at a public school – but I totally agree with your thoughts on defying stereotypical beauty. For the record, I can't imagine you looking “plain jane” or not all Goth-Loli'd up. Thinking of it just does not compute.

I totally love the Lime Crime makeup line (oh god I rhyme). I'm a little sad you can't order samples, though, because my skin is a total *bitch* about nearly everything. I get rashes from antibacterial soap, for goodness' sake!

Back OT: subculture does a lot of stuff that is frankly more appealing than some things mainstream designers come up with for their couture shows. Just, really – look at some of the stuff in this gallery (http://www.splendora.com/shoe_must_be_insane/cr…) and you'll definitely see what I mean.
I'm happy that you have summed up my thoughts so elegantly :)

I think across all cultures, “normal” takes on different expressions (ie, wearing a burka or sari) — but has the same underlying motivation. An attempt to fit people into safe containers, so that we feel secure about the world around us. A delusion.

  • CRuof

    Hi!

I like your clothes and you should never change : )

I don't get to wear neat stuff like that mostly cuz I'm a chub ball and well nothing that cool is usually in my size but if they did I'd get them in a heartbeat! But does it really matter what I or you or anyone else wears? Nope not at all because it's the person who's important and if you're a kind and good person then that's all that matters and I think you're a very nice person so I think you should never change : ) ( I know I sound like a sap but eh )

I'm not an ambercrombie, or American Eagle fan, actually I think they're a breeding ground for inconsiderate, mean girls who love to gossip and make fun of people who are different from them. Then again that's just my opinion….

That and every time I hear the word Ambercrombie I think of Tim Burton's short film Vincent so that doesn't help much ^^; ” He likes to experiment on his dog ambercrombie in the hopes of creating a horrible zombie.”

  • CRuof

    THE CAPE IS AWESOME!

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

    Thank you darling!

I think what's awesome about many Gothic/alt fashion designers is that they are happy to tailor clothes to all sizes. Gloomth is a great example of a company that will take orders to fit. Definitely check them out!

Hahah I love Vincent! I wonder if he named the dog after the clothing company on purpose..

  • CRuof

Also I don't think it matters what a person wears what matters is who the person is inside. And I think you're a nice person so you should NEVER change : )

I personally wish I could dress like you, but I'm a chub ball all neat clothing no matter what style it is in is never in my size, oh well.

That and it might be just me but the girls who wear clothes that are the “norm” tend to be mean and nasty so I have the theory that American Eagle and Ambercrombie are breeding grounds for inconsiderate girls.

Although I can't help but think of Vincent Price when I think the name Ambercrombie. Gotta love Tim Burton: “He likes to experiment on his dog Ambercrombie, in hopes of creating a horrible zombie.”

  • CRuof

Maybe I mean if you think about it those who wear the brand are like fashion zombies : )

I like your clothes ^^ and your taste. Go you!

Here are photos of Lime Crime’s yummy lipstick tubes. Unicorns and pink! They stand out in my makeup case.

I find it difficult to indulge people purporting that such a thing as “normal” exists. We don’t know what normal is because, so far as we know, this concept is entirely relative.

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

I think across all cultures, “normal” takes on different expressions (ie, wearing a burka or sari) — but has the same underlying motivation. An attempt to fit people into safe containers, so that we feel secure about the world around us. A delusion.

AGREE AGREE AGREE (about the subculture thing).
It’s not that I dress that way a lot – I mean, probably my most extreme thing right now is the fact that I have Manic Panic’s Purple Haze on the underside/bangs of my hair, and I’ve only recently started because now I’m at a public school – but I totally agree with your thoughts on defying stereotypical beauty. For the record, I can’t imagine you looking “plain jane” or not all Goth-Loli’d up. Thinking of it just does not compute.

I totally love the Lime Crime makeup line (oh god I rhyme). I’m a little sad you can’t order samples, though, because my skin is a total *bitch* about nearly everything. I get rashes from antibacterial soap, for goodness’ sake!

Back OT: subculture does a lot of stuff that is frankly more appealing than some things mainstream designers come up with for their couture shows. Just, really – look at some of the stuff in this gallery (http://www.splendora.com/shoe_must_be_insane/crazy_shoe_gallery#content-jump) and you’ll definitely see what I mean.
I’m happy that you have summed up my thoughts so elegantly :)

Also: your Lime Crime link is broken :(

      Try “limecrimemakeup.com” instead~

I like how you dress it’s neat, who wants to dress like the rest of the world, a bunch of clones. Just keep on ignoring them ^_^

  • Tofu4me

Lime Crime's D'Lilac lipstick is a much better blend to me. I love the smooth finish it has over your lips. Tube is very cute! ^^

    Hi!

I like your clothes and you should never change : )

I don’t get to wear neat stuff like that mostly cuz I’m a chub ball and well nothing that cool is usually in my size but if they did I’d get them in a heartbeat! But does it really matter what I or you or anyone else wears? Nope not at all because it’s the person who’s important and if you’re a kind and good person then that’s all that matters and I think you’re a very nice person so I think you should never change : ) ( I know I sound like a sap but eh )

I’m not an ambercrombie, or American Eagle fan, actually I think they’re a breeding ground for inconsiderate, mean girls who love to gossip and make fun of people who are different from them. Then again that’s just my opinion….

That and every time I hear the word Ambercrombie I think of Tim Burton’s short film Vincent so that doesn’t help much ^^; ” He likes to experiment on his dog ambercrombie in the hopes of creating a horrible zombie.”

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

      Thank you darling!

I think what’s awesome about many Gothic/alt fashion designers is that they are happy to tailor clothes to all sizes. Gloomth is a great example of a company that will take orders to fit. Definitely check them out!

Hahah I love Vincent! I wonder if he named the dog after the clothing company on purpose..

    Question about the makeup, do you know if it’s the kind that doesn’t cause allergies? I’m highly allergic to skin products ^^;

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

Many people with sensitive skin have raved about Aromaleigh’s mineral makeup — I’ve received samples and had great experiences with the shades.

Ok, I’ll give it a try when ever I get the chance to buy something online ^__^ Thanks for telling me

It definitely does. Amazing work that you turned around and spoke to them. It's so strange how they think that when they talk about someone they suddenly turn deaf… Oh well, it doesn't bother me any more~ So long as I'm comfortable then I don't care X3 Keep on wearing your awesome clothes and styles! You rock!

I agree completely with your opinion on alternative style.
I would like to say that your blog helped me in many ways. I used to be self-conscious with my clothing because many people would give rude comments that “Halloween is over” and that I was a “freak.” But after finding this blog, I'm not scared of being myself in public anymore and I feel at my best and beautiful whenever I wear my frilly, poofy skirts and double-decker shoes. I'm even working to become a fashion designer and open up my own store with alternative fashion clothing! (I'm already selling some accessories and clothes!) So thank you for inspiring me La Carmina!

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

^______^ That is wonderful to hear! You're doing great!

You're not alone in getting horrible comments from time to time… the only way to keep going is by letting words slide off your back and doing good work. I'd love to see your designs — feel free to post links in the comments to share!

Ohh cool. I have wanted to work at home, but I decided that would drive me nuts after a few years. Around what time in May? My mom wants us to go to China sometime in the spring. =O It's not too far.

I also like black lipstick, and deep blues and purples. What kind of cat? 8D

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

I'm the opposite… I can't deal with offices. Not sure yet about May but I'll keep you posted!

My cat, Basil Farrow, is a Scottish Fold. Here's his blog – http://lacarmina.com/basilfarrow/ – and he'll add you on Facebook! xoxo

I love the way the photos turned out. They setting may have been a bit morbid but it all came out tasteful and lovely, if I might say.

I think it's rather annoying how people will still try to tell you what they say you should do >_>+
I'm like you; I wear what I want because it reflects on my personality, I like it, etc. It shouldn't matter to anyone else if I have bleached hair and piercings and clothes that are normally not sold in the mall. Alternative fashions are awesome; goth, cybergoth, visual kei, gothic lolita, kodona, oshare, fairy kei, etc. etc. the list goes on. It's just fun to dress up in those types of clothes. To me, the mainstream fashions are SOOOO boring >_>+ The people who preach about normalcy need to pull their head out of their arse and realize that they are the strange ones, on how they think that we're strange because we are different people!

  • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

I'd much rather live in this exciting, experimental fashion world than the one that they want us to fit into… keep it up!!

  • Seiran

LOL Yeah honestly, does it affect them? No, it doesn't.
There will always be people that can't accept the fact that there are people who have different preferences to different things, sexuality and fashion are included in those as well as lifestyles and the type of foods we eat, etc.
