If you’ve been reading this blog for a while, you know I always ring in the New Year with an experimental look. Some people squeal kawaii; others scream ai-yah. (Remember last year’s outfit?) I say New Years is a time to be super-theatrical — and what better way to start the year than with fashion fireworks?

I saw holy tights in a Japanese boutique for $85. Why pay so much when you can grab a pair of scissors and DIY? I cut various sized holes in an old pair of black tights, and wore them over red striped knee socks from Harajuku. What do you think? You should try it too.

Petticoat skirt: Spider
Black ruffle top with a tie front: Metamorphose temps de fille
Mini witch’s hat: Daiso, the Japanese dollar store
Red and gold hair ribbon: from a chocolate box

My makeup is inspired by Kozi’s Malice Mizer pierrot look. I swept purple/brown Aromaleigh shadow down from my eyebrows towards my nose, red eyeshadow over the crease, and drew runny eyeliner with Urban Decay. My lips are a blend of magenta and black. To finish: white powder and sticker dots on my forehead from Daiso.

The lace top is an old thing I found in my lingerie drawer. And the cherry red top… is actually a retro one-piece swimsuit from Pin-Up Girl Couture! I loathe most swimsuit designs (can you imagine me in a pink bikini?). But Pin-Up Girl has a huge selection of 1950s retro swimwear that’s demure and alluring at the same time. Highly recommended for the Goths, Lolitas and Neo-Victorians out there.

sparkle fake nails, how to paint on japanese nail art, glittery three colors nail polish, creative cool original nail art, gothic lolita pierrot, harajuku street style, japan streets, fruit fashion, purple nailpolish, cheap daiso dollar store beauty products, asian beauty items

I always paint my own nails, and here’s my new favorite technique: Triple Sparkle. First, apply a purple-black base coat. Then, put an uneven layer of purple sparkle polish over the top half of the nail. Finally, paint large glitter polish over the tip, and seal the deal with a top coat. I love how the look lengthens your nails and puts a twist on the French manicure. And anyone can achieve it, even if you have shaky hands!

Come read one of my favorite CNNGo articles yet: a gallery of the wacky world of Asian tissue packs. Which is your favorite?

Song of the Day #275: Lady Gaga – Bad Romance (I didn’t like the songs from Gaga’s first album much, but I dig this darker New Wave-ish track. And you gotta heart her Klaus Nomi fetish costumes.)

I am now in the process of hunting down black tights and grabbing my scissors- I didn’t know that could look so cool! :O I’d love to wear them over my red and white striped stockings- that’d be so cute X3

Also, UBER THANKS for the link to that retro site! I’m in love with the ’50′s retro style X3 I’ve already darted to my mother who insists I buy more dresses and tugged her along to look at the site and it seems we finally both agree on clothing. Yay! I won’t look like a hobo for much longer! *Laughs* Domo arigatou gozaimasu! <3

Ohhh that’s brilliant! I think everyone can agree on classic, retro dresses… and if that means a shopping spree for you, all the better! Let me know which dresses you pick; I love so many of them…

I love those tights! So cute, what a great idea. I used to wear these black wide-hole fishnet tights over my old black and white thigh highs, i guess thats kind of my version of this look haha.

I’d totally be up for doing this is all my black tights weren’t ripped to shreds already because of all the runs… I have a real hard time finding tights that actually fit because i’m super skinny but my legs are too long for S/M and M/L are too baggy on me :( I go to a catholic high school and i wore a pair that was too small once with the school skirt and after first period there was a giant hole in them, it was super embarrassing. lol sorry for rambling, i really love this outfit though! :)

I love wearing tights over tights… a great Japanese layered street style look.

Hahah I have similar problems… the other day, my tights kept falling off my hips! >< I had to keep pulling them up…

Tights over tights are a clever idea! You look original AND you stay warm. I’m always a fan of fashion and function going together.

When it comes to swimwear, I go for the more sporty surfer girl style. However, I can appreciate Pin-Up Girl using more than just pieces of string to hold up the goods (which is better than the recent surfer girl styles).

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

haha yeah, it’s always a bonus when fashion is functional! Heavens knows some of my outfits aren’t practical…
      Surfer style is very cute.

love the tights! How did you get such round circles?

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

Thanks! I folded the tights horizontally and cut out a small half-circle. This created 2 round circles on either side. :)

  • Altermusic

I’d probably kiss you but you’d probably run away from me!!

  • Murbela

In the first two pics you look like a doll; I want to pick you up and bring you home, I have the perfect spot for you! XD

I really like the tights layered look. At first I was like: “how did she do that?” Then: “oooooohhhh” Then I read your description of how you did it lol

I actually wish your make-up would’ve been even more over the top, is that weird? lol Maybe it’s because you look like you could totally pull it off.

How do you do your nails? What polish or other products do you use? To do something like what you did it would take me a long time just because of the drying time that all those layers of polish would require. Usually if I don’t wait long enough for the polish to dry I end up messing my nails and it’s annoying after all the time I put into it. Do you use one of those fast-drying drops thingies that are supposedly used in nail salons? I’ve recently discovered those but I didn’t buy them yet because I’ve been wondering about how they actually work; like, if the solution dries the nail polish is that all it does or does it somehow get to the nail and damage it? Yeah…

My fav tissue pack is probably the Let’s Go Panda one. But the 1976 Hello Kitty one is cute and a bit ironic in a way: “Let’s start each day with a great big smile!”… so here’s some tissues for later in the day when you’ll be cryin’ your eyes out, hehe. And the android handing out the tissue packs = kawaii!

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

It’s funny — when I put my picture next to Kozi’s, I also thought… hmm, he did it much more dramatically than I did!

I’ve found that it’s worth paying a bit more for good nail polish (OPI and equivalent brands). Whenever I buy cheap dollar store polish, I’m disappointed by the patchy coverage and poor adhesion. It didn’t take much time to do because for the second and third coats, I only went over half and then the tip of the nail. I also didn’t have to apply the polish neatly, since these were sparkly coats over the solid base color.

I don’t use a fast-drying drop over it… just a clear sealing top coat. I usually do my nails when I’m watching TV or something, so there’s more than enough time to let them dry. :)

      • Murbela

I recently tried Essie nail polishes and I wasn’t that much more impressed with them (you still need to apply 2 coats for an even look + base and top coat, that’s a lot of work). Even after an hour if I bump into something there will be an indentation in the polish which was supposed to be dry by then. And I always, without fail, bump into smthg with my nails after I just made them pretty -_-; But it’s strange, I got one color of Essie polish that seemed to be good quality and then I got another color which behaved totally different (and I bought them both from the same place). Didn’t try OPI… yet.

I was wondering about the way you do your nails especially because of the way you did them in this post because you have more coats at the tip of the nail where it’s easier to bump into stuff and mess it up if it’s not dry. But I guess because it’s glittery you wouldn’t really be able to notice it.

Anyway, I’m talking too much about nail polish…

        • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

Hmmm I don’t think I’ve used Essie. The ones for this look are Milan (from CVS pharmacy) and everything’s still in place after 3 days. I think I dab a HUGE amount of top sealing coat over everything and let it dry… I have a sample from OPI and something from Hong Kong that works very well. Also, in a way, there are 4 layers on top of the bottom base coat (since the glitter layers are party translucent), which keeps it in place…

  • Ellen

I love your outfit, it’s a perfect combination of scary and sweet :]
I’m also glad that someone else appreciates Lady GaGa; most people I know dismiss her as ‘bad pop’. And I agree, her new cd is much better than her first one, though I liked Poker Face.

    • http://www.lacarmina.com lacarmina

Her music isn’t something I can really get into, but I do like several of the tracks. And I love her attitude — her replies to silly interview questions are pure genius. Someone asked Lady Gaga who her ideal man would be, and she said she’d like a foursome with the Jonas Brothers – yess!

I do similar styles with fishnet tights; my favorite look is to wear my ripped net garters over my red nets and pair them up with shorts- kind of like this.

I do admit, I love the solid contrast of these tights though, so I’m going to have to look and see if I have any plain black ones that are due for a slice ‘n’ dice.
