DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS BARS: INDIE, ALTERNATIVE GOTH CLUBS & NIGHTLIFE IN VEGAS. AMAZING RACE GOTH TEAM AT MAGIC MARKETPLACE CLOTHING EXPO.

Las Vegas is not exactly paradise for us alternative/spooky types. The nightclubs at the major hotels charge $30 entry — and for what? To see the girls you went to high school with in stilettos and mini-dresses, grinding with men best described as “homies”? Shudder, shudder.

Salvation is away from the Vegas Strip, in the old downtown illuminated by restored retro neon lights. Two years ago, I had a riotous time at Beauty Bar: 80s dance tracks and manicures, with a hilarious floor show by drag queen Toni. Next door is The Griffin, a dark and gargoyle-y bar with strong drinks and no cover. The Downtown Cocktail Room has a good selection of our beloved absinthe (we had Pernod and Mansinthe). To top it off, we won $15.50 from a slot machine — and screamed so loudly!

The previous night, we met Kynt at Double Down, a dive bar legendary for serving Ass Juice and the Bacon Martini. It was packed with types that one can only describe as weird, even by our standards. The psychotic murals and “videos so insane they once made Timothy Leary turn blue” added to the lurid atmosphere.

Everything’s out of order… but on Day 2 of MAGIC clothing expo, we met Kynt and Vyxsin at the Lip Service booth and snuck them into the press room for free food.

At the Akumu Ink booth, I showed off Basil Farrow’s blog and everyone went awww for my earless wahh wahh cat!

LA creative types tend to end up at Magic. I ran into Dienzo, the talented Gothic artist who did the vampire painting of La Carmina. What do you think the pink decorations in my hair are made from? (Answer: paper clips from Berlin. Random!)

Our pal Rony Alwin of Rony’s Photobooth had a photo exhibit at MAGIC. Do you recognize any of the creatures he’s photographed? Amanda Lepore and Jeffree Star are among them…

Let’s wrap up our Vegas days with photos of alt/Gothic clothes displayed at Magic. Yukiro and I went wild for Mariannas, lush and Gothic jewelry that you can customize.

What do you love and hate about Las Vegas? Do you have any favorite hangouts? Have you been to the downtown spots I mentioned?

Las Vegas is too flashy, as in, too much girls with boobs hanging out of their mini dresses.
Also, lots with bad sense of fashion. Agree?

Wigs don’t work too well for me… I have a LOT of hair, and it’s hard to find one that fits or is comfortable… I’ve been adding color via feathers and scarves. More pics to come! Love your recent blog posts, btw.

My family and I used to go to Vegas for Christmas vacation every year. We’ve stopped because it got old and the places have become less family-friendly in an attempt to a hip party spot. I used to love hanging around the ancient Egyptian-styled shops in Luxor and the jester’s court in Excalibur, but they’re not really around anymore. I’m glad the Venetian hasn’t lost its character, and plus it’s got museum exhibits (the fact that I go to Las Vegas to go to museums, animal exhibits, and aquariums is proof that I’m a huge nerd ^^).

I agree… I went with my family when I was 6 and 8 years old (or something like that), and there was much more for my cousins and I to explore. Downtown Vegas has some very cool retro spots and exhibits you might like!

There is also an 18+ night “Carpe Noctem” on Thursdays.
        http://www.myspace.com/carpenoctemlv

And.. this is a small night but hey,(cheap drinks) “Dead man’s party” Sunday night at Divebar.
        http://www.myspace.com/divebar

And there was a great Friday goth night that very recently went down called “Skitzofrenia”, We’re hoping to get another great Friday night here in Vegas soon!

        Cheers!

I was just looking at the “carpe nocturn” page and it looks like it’s on Wednesdays, not Thursdays. TT.TT are there any more clubs that play more deathrock? I noticed dead mans party but that’s not until Sunday right? Industrial and ebm are nice sometimes… but darwave and synthpop? I’m not much into that…

Unfortunately not at the momment, there used to be a night called “Cyanide” that is just what you’re looking for, however it is long gone. for now, try Dead Man’s Party.
Also http://www.blackdoorvegas.com/ is hosting a monthly goth night now, try them, depending on the featured DJ, they’ll play what you like ~_^
