I hear quite a few of you recognized Rose at the Dir en Grey Seattle concert, and asked where I was. Sadly, I couldn’t make it because of travel and work overload… However, Rose submitted an A+ report and had quite the adventure, including hanging out with Dir en Grey in the flesh! It’s wonderful to hear that the famous musicians are sweethearts in person, and truly make time for their fans. (Photos by Rose, except the ones used with permission from Edge.)

It took me an entire day to travel to Seattle — but it was more than worth it to see my favorite band, Dir en Grey! On September 10th (the day before the live), I rushed to get myself glam-fabulous for a nightcrawl at club Can Can (which I visited with La Carmina last month). I had just approached the front door when the owner Chris (above right) saw me, and gave me a huge warm welcome. He hooked me up with free absinthe, and the fun began. I missed the beginning of the Castaways show, but it was spectacular and totally different than the one we saw.

The next day I went down to Uwajimaya to buy some cute Rilakkuma things, then stopped in the Daiso at the train station before going back to get ready for the Dir en Grey concert.

I got to the Showbox SoDo around 5:30pm, and received my press ticket and photo pass. Then I went into the bar, so that I could get in before the others outside. I want to say I was paying attention to their opening act but all I could think was “DIRENGREYDIRENGREY oh my God I get to take photos of Dir en Grey hurry up!” The band was Evaline, and they were all right, but honestly I am never going to remember anyone who plays before Diru.

I bought a Dir en Grey poster, made my way up to the barrier again, and waited for them to come onstage. Finally the lights dimmed and the beginning of Sa Bir began to play. I was allowed in front on the barrier, since I had a photo pass, and out they came!

I lost my breath, as I always do when I see my favorite band in person. And this time, I was so close, just inches away from my music idols. Kyo looked very different from the last time I saw him in Seattle; his blond hair is now short and black, and he was dressed in jeans and a black shirt. Die was looking lovely; he’s got his hair longer again, as I like it. Kaoru… I think he always looks like he knows just how awesome he is. Last time, Toshiya’s hair was long and shaved on the side, and he had a little facial hair going on. This time, he has a cute short little hair cut, and a clean-shaved face; he was dressed in a black skirt and long sleeved black shirt. And then there was Shinya, lovely Shinya: white long sleeved shirt, and a similar hairstyle as last time I saw him. Beautiful hair as always.

Kyo put his heart into the songs, as always, and they all looked to be enjoying themselves on stage. Shinya, he always amazes me, tiny and beautiful, but so much energy on stage. Such amazing drumming; I don’t know how he does it.

I’m pretty sure this is the correct Dir en Grey Seattle set list: Sa Bir, Red Soil, Agitated Screams of Maggots, Gaika, Chinmoku ga Nemuru Koro, Hageshisa to Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami, Obscure, Shokubeni, Rotting Root, Inward Scream, Dozing Green, Vinushka, The Final, Reiketsu Nariseba, Rasetsukoku, Encore, Kodou.

The crowd and I went crazy when they played The Final, and went positively insane for the encore. The songs Kodou and Vinushka always get a huge approval from the crowd. I was surprised that they played Rasetsukoku (it was great live) and happy they played Dozing Green (such a beautiful song). Sadly, after they played Kodou, the show was over… As always, they could have played forever and it still wouldn’t have been long enough!

I went outside for a break, and even though I knew Apocalyptica was up next (and Kyo would most likely sing with them), I chose to stay outside. I made my way to where the staff was loading up Dir en Grey equipment, and sat down with about two dozen other Diru fans. I talked to many nice people and waited for a glimpse of the band when they would finally come out. Some fans recognized me from your blog and from the D’espairsRay and Miyavi concerts. They all wanted to know why La Carmina wasn’t there too!

After over an hour of freezing, out came Toshiya: so cute. Quite sometime later, Kyo emerged with a towel over his head and waved as he quickly went to the bus. Shinya waved and quickly disappeared. I chatted with their translator and roadie, who I had met before. They invited me to the bar across the street. I found a seat…

… and noticed the merchandise sales guy at the bar with Kaoru and Die! So, I summoned up my courage and went over to ask for autographs. I walked up and tapped Kaoru’s shoulder, and asked him to sign something, which he did. Die asked my name, and wrote: “To Rose, I love you, Dir en Grey, Die.” I can’t tell you everything that went on behind-the-scenes, but I had so much fun and couldn’t stop laughing.

I stayed for another hour with the band members and their friends. Then we went outside, and the drummer from Apocalyptica set up his DJ equipment in front of the buses! They had a silly DJ party with some of the members of Apocalyptica, Kaoru, Die, and some random fans. Eicca from Apocalyptica kept trying to get me to dance, but I stood around beside Kaoru most of the time. I asked their translator if there was any chance I could get a pic with Shinya. She said he was already asleep on the bus. I’ll have to wait until next time… but she kindly gave me a poster signed by every member of Dir en Grey.

Needless to say, I had the most incredible time. Dir en Grey just means so much to me, and has for ten years now. Their music has gotten me through many horrible times in my life, and I know so many others feel this way too. I’ll be counting down the days until they return to America!

Have you seen Dir en Grey in concert yet? Did you have any memorable encounters with them? How has their music impacted your life?

Japanese Word of the Day: Haiiro = Grey
Song of the Day: Dir en Grey – Kodou

Hey Rose. All I got to say is don’t let the rabid jealous fangirls get you down. As much as they would like to deny it, that is what it is, jealousy. You are beautiful and I think it’s awesome that such a hardcore fan was able to have this experience. In the defense of the other fans, this is not a very professional review, it seems it would be better suited for your personal blog. But the bands management approved it before it was posted here so it should not be an issue.

The Dir en grey fanbase is just very protective of the band members and many of them have even created fantasies of what the members are in real life. I don’t think that is fair to the band, but it happens in any hardcore fandom. I would say that maybe next time it would be a good idea to leave the details about the after party out of the official review and then post those details in a personal journal or blog. Not that it wont get out and wont cause drama, but at least you are taking the steps to separate the details from the professional review, which is how people view it since you had a press pass. But it is all over and done with now, just be happy about your experience and don’t let anyone take it away from you.

    Hey everyone,
I usually don’t delete comments on my blog, even when critical or downright mean. However, I have edited this concert report so some of the comments are no longer relevant… I welcome your thoughts on the report now. Thanks.

You’ll probably delete this, but I just want to say that it probably sorta bothers them to keep being referred to as “Visual Kei,” they haven’t really done that kind of appearance for a while.

“Kaoru: When we were growing up around [the] late ’80s and early ’90s, visual kei was influenced by glam music. When visual kei became a huge hit, people started seeing it as a form of entertainment and not as being rock. The darker, more extreme image from before is lost, and now people see it as being a genre that appeals to teenage girls.” – Blistering Interview

“Kaoru: Also, I wonder how many Japanese bands are seriously thinking about staying in the U.S. market after the J-Rock boom ends. It true that at the beginning, we broke into the U.S. market with J-Rock boom, but now we don’t want to rely on the fashion aspect of it. We are touring just as American bands do.” – SFWeekly Interview

“KAORU: Honestly, I don’t care about what people call our music. But I’m sure at this point, we’re different from a typical visual kei band. Maybe at the starting point we were more like a visual kei band, but not so much anymore.

SK: So you kind of grew out of it.

      KAORU: Yes.

SK: Obviously being a “visual kei band” is not so much about your music than it is about your looks. How would you categorize your music? Or do you protest any kind of categorization altogether?

TOSHIYA: It might be okay to call it simply Rock.” – CrusherMagazine Interview.

I appreciate the quotes — of course I won’t delete this, it’s very helpful!
Nowhere in the article is the band referred to as Visual Kei. I filed this article under Visual Kei / Jrock concerts because there’s no other category, but I agree with you in that VK is not an accurate description for them.

At least the infamous Missy has not seen this yet, feel lucky, as she likely would’ve threatened to fly to Seattle just to start shit with you, or do a voo doo hex on you from the comfort of her bed-room instead.

I was amused by her interpretation of the discussion her which she then posted to her LJ for her loyal subjects to read, saying that “I think you’re a douche, and the fans do too,” when only a handful of comments seemed to be attacking Rose while the rest seemed to be pretty supportive / congratulatory…

Typical. When things aren’t how you want them, just re-write them, omit some details, switch things around a bit but don’t post a link to the source. Since there’s nothing for them to go look up, it’s assumed by your reader that what little bit of modified info you’ve given them is the truth. Also, never let the subject know they’re being discussed elsewhere, so that they aren’t aware and won’t attempt to contravene. When they do find out and come to your turf, silence them and keep repeating “well, you started it!”

Even if she does figure out how to post here (srsly? You just put in a working email address and click “post as,” it’s really not that difficult), it seems unlikely that “misses Die” will get any words in edge-wise around here.

So she’ll just have to settle for trash-talking poor Rose and exaggerating the number of negative comments there are on this concert review from a distance via her ‘crystalplumage’ LJ, where at least she can control who in her lot sees what.

            And of course, when she eventually does learn that her target is aware that she is being discussed by her and hers, and in a not-very-pleasant manner, she’ll likely remove any evidence of her unsupported and mean-spirited claims about poor Rose, who actually did nothing at all to garner her hate (her willingness to slander others is ironic, when you consider that this is a person who scours the internet looking for any mention of themselves and threatens to sue people for libel). Which is why it’s good to have one of these just in case;

            s19 . postimage . org / i1vjh71ld / A _ Screencap . gif

And since you’re obviously here, reading this (or you wouldn’t be posting about it on your LJ) I really want to know what you’re feelings/opinions are on SOPA.

And mods, please allow me to comment freely, I’m here in support, not in condemnation, of Rose.

LOL.. This is the reason why I do not like going to any type of Japanese rock event outside of Japan. The fans get jealous and hate each other if anyone gets the chance to meet and of the members OR in my case, I was in front of the stage right in front of Die and had some dumb girl start kicking me in the back of the legs to get me out of her way. I also had some girls give me really shitty looks when I was hanging out with Sisen during a show while he was on tour with Seileen and GPkism.. I could also hear her make shitty comments about me too… I was like hm you don’t know me and why are you making those comments? I have known Sisen for a few years now…and if he wants to talk to me or dance with me, that is his choice. Seriously people.. grow up! Geez we are ALL FANS….. no reason to get shitty with each other.

EXCELLENT REPORT! I’m happy Rose got to hang out with Die and Karou… and thank you for talking about it, because I’ve been trying to find some sort of fan report, and who also got the meet the band , either VIP or elsewhere…I loved reading this…

I don’t like going to concerts. However, Dir en Grey is the only band that I go out of my way to see. And somehow it always works out that I do see them. When they were here (in NYC) last November for 3 days…I didn’t buy tickets to see them,

BUT, my long lost friend called me up…asked what i’d be doing the next evening, and invited me NOT to the concert, but at their MEET AND GREET signing at kinokuniya near times square!! It was also a panel interview, and I got my Urosburos LP case signed, and I remember Die being first in the panel and saying “wooow” when i took out my LP. I think he’s probably the most friendly and out going, and your report proved it haha

Also I did see them 3 weeks ago, and they were great in NYC. I especially like it when Kyo screams “NEWWWWW YORKKKKK” during the first song. I wonder if the does that in any other city?

    Thank you again!

I’m so glad you enjoyed the report! This blog tries to present the personal, fan perspective on band reviews (as opposed to dry, facts-only reviews that you see in newspapers), so I’m happy you enjoyed her story.

How awesome that you got to attend their panel too! They had a VIP meet/greet event at the Seattle show for people who bought the pricier VIP tickets. I heard that they just got to meet the band briefly and take a photo with all of them…

Ahhh! I see. We didn’t get to take pictures at the meet and greet (back in November). I didn’t get VIP tix this time..mainly because they were sold out on the first day for New York lol. Oh well

Ahhh…Dir en Grey, Dir en Grey…Dir en Grey. I guess I can say…well all I can really say is – they’ve given me a future and a reason to keep looking toward that future. Honestly – I swear to God. They are the ones who did it, and it’s all because of one song: Namamekashiki Ansoku, Tamerai ni Hohoemi.

I love it to bits and pieces.

Now of course there’s other beautiful pieces as well…

Sajou no Uta, Obscure, Child Prey, Embryo, Undecided, -Mushi-, JESSICA, Yurameki, Raison d’etre, Cage, Yokan, Akuro no Oka, Riyuu, Hotarubi, Berry, Macabre, Audrey, Taiyou no Ao, C, Itoshisa Wa Fuhai ni Tsuki, Jesus Christ R’nR, The Final, Kodou, Audience Killer Loop, Red…[em], Kasumi, R To the Core, Embryo, FILTH, Conceived Sorrow, Disabled Complexes, The Pledge, Repetition of Hatred, Vinushka, Toguro, Glass Skin, Dozing Green, Ware, Yami Tote…(MY 2nd FAVORITE), and Inconvenient Ideal.

There we go…those are all the songs I love and cherish and do a bit of R’nR with.

Dir en Grey is a band which constantly evolves into some of the most unpredictable things. No human can guess what they’ll do next – no one. Yet you only realize just how relative, true, and understanding each album, song is to the human being. I swear there’s at least one song that connects with one person on this planet. And if a person doesn’t connect with any song, they must be some filthy rich NY investment banker who inherited what his/her family passed down for generations (ugh).

Glad to hear you had a great time Ms. Schwarz. I’m sure “unknown” just envies you as much as I do.

    *cold stare* 。。。

    ^_^ – take care!

Enjoyment of music should bring pleasure to a person. I don’t see how people can get that from pointless bickering over things like who is and who isn’t a “true fan” and the reasons why. Enjoyment of music should be something that you are happy to share with others and make friends through, not a way to brow-beat others.

You can own every thing by, know everything about and have been to every performance of a band or artist, and still be more agitating to be around than the fan who has only heard a handful of songs and only been to one show or none at all.

To think you “own” a certain band or artist is rather petty, if you really love something and want others to appreciate it, you will want to share it with everyone you can, not hoard it to yourself trying to preserve it in a bubble of obscurity. You would be happy for their success, not cringe at the thought of them no longer being your “special thing.”

There’s so much sadistic hate and drama swirling around in J-Rock fandom. When I hear stories of fans who just happened to get a lucky chance meeting with their favorite band or artist getting harassed by gangs of fangirls until they try to end their lives, it makes me a saaaaaaaaaaaaad panda. We need more love and appreciation for each other as fans of the same music (not eye candy or “future husbands,” MUSIC, god dammit.)

Honestly, How can you see this as a concert review? A review, or how you label it; a concert review should be about the concert and not trying to meet the members from 1 band. If she received a press pass, that should have been enough to get set lists for all bands, or at least an accurate set list. Not professional, and it makes it even harder for real live reporters and not fangirls, a hard time to get press pass when people does things like this.

Thanks for your comment. Bands / companies provide us with press passes precisely because our coverage is an alternative to mainstream newspapers/magazines. We don’t do impersonal, standard concert reviews. The emphasis here is on the fan experience at concerts, and many readers of this blog enjoy this approach…

    I love Dir en Grey.
I hate their insane fangirls. They nearly killed me at the last show I went to see Dir en Grey. I’m not even kidding.
(They’re the kind of people that post hateful comments about people who got to meet the band.)

But it’s awesome that you got to meet the band members, Rose! Never you mind the jealous haters.

Haha, you remembered! (I’m not going to forget anytime soon…)

But it does sound like a lot of other people go through the same thing, looking at the comments…
I kind of wish J-rock bands could issue some kind of statement to tell fans to be courteous, but then again, I can’t really see it having an effect. :/

I’m pretty tough in pits (hey, I even swallowed my own vomit once!), but I can definitely think of other fans that could have been seriously hurt or even died from the situation I was in, and I really wish there was a way to make sure it doesn’t happen. Hell, even I thought I was going to die for a while in there! Good thing the fangirls inadvertently propped me up so I couldn’t even collapse on the floor and get trampled. -______-

How do those insane fans not realize that disgusting behavior like that makes it even LESS likely that they would ever be allowed close to members of the band? *Totally beyond my comprehension*

Yeah… I can vouch that Rose, while a huge fan of Diru, is very respectful and calm in their presence (and she had met / hung out with them before)…

And more importantly, how do those kinds of fans get into this silly mindset that the band is totally going to prop them up on some pedestal and put them above every other fan and congratulate them on their seniority and superiority and how hard they “pwn” the other fans with a lower rank in the fandom hierarchy because they “weren’t there since the beginning” – “don’t own every single thing they’ve ever released as an import” – and “haven’t been to see them numerous times in Japan?” and “don’t know their innermost thoughts and feelings about every single possible subject” – One has to ask themselves, does the band really care about who wins the “competition” that fangirls seem to make out of being a fan of a band? Do they care if someone has been a fan since La:Sadies or if someone only found out about them because they played a show with another band they’d gone to see?

As a fan of Many Japanese bands that touring the USA, I can say I’ve seen some truly great fans and I’ve seen a few terrible fans. Dir en grey is definitely no exception to this. I’ve heard horror tales of girls (rarely do i hear about guys) PURPOSEFULLY hitting, kicking, pulling hair, stepping on others feet, stealing items from other people, biting, swearing, talking down to, even getting people thrown out of shows for something they didn’t even do (this list doesn’t even include my own personal experiences with fans) It makes me want to NOT associate myself as a fan of Japanese bands. However, I’ve also heard of fans who have given up backstage passes for other fans, fans who’ve helped other fans to the bannister, or helped them off the ground when they fell. I’ve even heard of fans who’ve made sure stragglers have made it home safe. Those are the times that I’m proud to be associated with fellow fans.

High running emotions shouldnt be an excuse for bad concert etiquette. Even the biggest &/or most hardcore concerts I’ve been to, where people leave in ambulances, the fans, as a whole, act better than some of the fans I’ve seen at Jrock concerts. The scene will never grow if new fans are scared away because of overly zealous fans.

To the jealous fans out there. Several of my friends have met Die. From what I’ve gleaned, Die is probably the most personable and outgoing member in the band. I’ve heard many stories of him talking to and interacting with fans. If you ACT NORMAL and don’t freak out, I’ve heard he’s actually quite friendly. It’s just being at the right place at the right time.

To Rose. I’m glad you had a wonderful time. Thank you for sharing your experiences and the fun pictures. It’s good to hear the bands enjoyed their selves. You really missed out on the Apocalyptica concert though. They’re amazing. If you ever have a chance again you should go see them live!

La Carmina, I’m sorry if this post comes across too harshly, but even though there are those bad seeds, there really are some great fans out there as well.

I know how Rose feel’s because I had the opportunity to meet Dir En Grey when they were here and they were so very nice to me :) and I been a big fan of them for years & these guy’s are my inspirations & a lot of the reason why I wanted to play music and become a music writer and become involved with the music community & I am thankful that I got to tell them just how much they mean to me.

    Rose!…pay no attention to fan’s who say mean thing’s ^^; I had that happen to me too T_T when I saw them for V.I.P after their show ended I got called awful thing’s too, but real Dir En Grey fan’s don’t act like complete groupies! *just saying* but also too most American fan’s go crazy over these band’s (obsessed) which is creepy a bit…but like I said I know that feeling of Rose being happy to see a great idolized band & I too await for them to come back to share their music once again…& also I thank Toshiya for finding my wallet and returning it to me ><;

Aww… You guys are kinda mean to Rose. D:
I mean, can’t a girl dream without someone ripping it to shreds? This is Rose talking about HER experience and that includes her opinions and emotions, and she obviously has a lot of love/respect for this band so of course she wants to hang out with them and etc… Whether or not she’s a “groupie” is subject to debate because I don’t know her at all and it depends on your personal idea of what a groupie is.
Oh, and I’m jealous of Rose too but I’m glad she had a good time.
-Is she wearing contacts in these pictures or is that her natural eye colour? It’s very pretty…

im a knot and love dir en grey but this page is a lie! this is not rose , roses, royal roses, royal roses has tan skin, actually has military and gov around him i think royal roses is a guy i dont know maybe a girl. anyways I saw royal roses in japan and a lot of people who are actially asian or bands know royal roses does not speak is like mana i guess you can say but really formal. i dont know why this white girl is talking as she knows but the real roses is tan skin, blue black dark eyes, hard to tell and black hair. oh yea and for those who dont know royal roses , just know royal roses is not a band and do help the military. Anyways the knot army pages are all fans, please understand that.

You guys who are knots stop talking bad about military because your making the band look like crap . If ur a fan support direngrey but don’t talk bad about people who risk their lives protecting asia or any country. Thanks.
