Domo arigato, Mr. Robato! Most people think of Akihabara as Tokyo’s otaku (nerd) district, populated by maid cafes, anime, manga, video games and electronics. But Nakano Broadway, an indoor shopping complex, is possibly more specialized. With bits of naughtiness thrown into the mix.

Want to see photos of Japan’s infamous underwear-vending machines? Keep reading…

Nakano is a five-minute subway ride from Shinjuku Station on the Chuo Express. You know you’re on the right track when you see obsessive fans gathered for an idol’s appearance.

The large Don Quixote store sold pink salamanders as pets. The fuzzy green ball is also an aquatic creature. Ah, symbiosis.

Note that they used a Scottish Fold cat to model this pet cooling mat. I’m itching to see the Dracula musical…

Broadway arcade is lined with small, indie stores that vend vinyl figurines and comic/cartoon memorabilia. My eyes drifted to Sebastian from Black Butler, and the Hide guitar goodies.

Vintage collectibles, such as these robotos.

Do vending machines that sell used panties truly exist in Japan? Indeed, for the low price of 500 yen.

Last year when I was in Tokyo my friend from Fukushima showed me Nakano. One whole day only Otaku stores, Otaku stores and even more Otaku stores… it was great and terrible at the same time and my feet hurt like hell… but I didn’t see any underwear vending machines there.
Therefore lots of other nice things! <3 And at the end of the day I ate Katsudon there. *yummy!*

That’s awesome! A lot of people miss Nakano when they visit Tokyo, so it’s great you got to see it.

In all my time in Japan I’ve never been to Akihabara much, but your expose on Nakano Broadway has got me interested!!

Haha the Dracula Musical looks like it’s going to turn out really campy and cheesy :P, but worth a watch just for the lolz.

I’m surprised that the used underwear are sold for only 500yen. I wonder how much the ladies/men who contribute them get paid for their works, if at all :-S

Hi Carmina! I never went to Nakano, but my boyfriend visited the Mandarake there and said it was crazy! I love Don Quixote, though — I’ve been to the one in Shinjuku. SO MUCH TO LOOK AT. I’d be interested to learn about a company that has those used underwear machines – so weird!!  <3 <3 <3 xoxox

That is an interesting thing though. It seems there are vending machines for everything nowadays. Now if only they had a electronics vending machine…

What’s with Japanese guys smelling drity underwear. I like lingerie but clean and on women before they take it off or better nude.

Hormones, some guys like their woman a little ripe and I’ve kind of learned some of those smells woman hate on other woman…Even if its unintentional. Repels some woman and attracts men.

This is how you know lesbians are messed up on every level, all the way down to their hormones and sexual attractiveness receptors, brain wiring, etc. Look into videos by DR CURTIS DUNCAN on youtube, regarding how plastics and other toxins screw up hormones. For men it’s even worse. An interesting question would be this: Would the dirty panties of (lesbian) “ELLEN” (daytime television star in USA) be as sexually attractive and powerful for normal heterosexual males as, say, the dirty panties of a non-lesbian ?

I have been 3 times, but the last time I went it was a Tuesday or Wednesday and like a ghost town, only 3 of the shops were open, same thing happened at den den taun in osaka, and didnt have time to revisit either on that trip >.< My poor friend never saw the wonders.

Anyone know why certain weekdays everything seems shut in Japan?

It’s true, the shops are often closed in Nakano Broadway. They closed relatively early the day that we visited.

Crazy question…but isn’t 500 yen like, $3? Seems like that’s cheaper than new panties from a store…which makes you wonder how much money can be in the business in the first place?
