Wild Tokyo Goth nightlife, cyber club nights and parties in Japan. Crazy Japanese fashion, teens and young street style.

Important DECEMBER 2014 update below

Many of these Goth parties have unfortunately ended, or are happening less frequently. If you’re coming to Japan, I suggest that you visit DecabarZ, the new location of Tokyo Decadance Bar (address 歌舞伎町1-2-13, Shinjuku-ku). For a sense of what goes on at this club, see my report from the old Decadance location. This bar is open almost every day, and attracts a colorful alt crowd.

Here is a recent report about the new Decabar Z and a Suspiria horror themed bar (Cambiare).

Heavy Pop has Harajuku / Jpop / alt parties about once a month. Check out their Facebook for the latest listings, and my blog post about Heavy Pop.

Sodom Tokyo has the occasional party (neo dark goth post punk minimal). Steampunk fans gather at Steam Garden, which happens a few times a year. Again, see their Facebook pages for upcoming events.

Finally, Midnight Mess and Tokyo Dark Castle have the occasional Goth club night, and always have a big event the week before Halloween. See links and coverage of past events further down.

Department H continues to have the craziest fetish party, on the first Saturday of the month.  See all my reports about Department H, at Kinema Klub in Uguisidani.

For info about J-rock and Visual Kei bars (where bands hang out), see the info near the bottom of this post.

BELOW are detailed reports on Japan Goth / EBM / Industrial club nights and locations. For the latest event announcements, check my blog and Facebook. Have fun!

† † † SHINJUKU / KABUKI-CHO MAP † † †

Sweet Lolita shopping guide, where to buy Gothic Lolita womens designer clothing in Tokyo Japan. Marui one department store in Shinjuku, trendy ladies fashion, cute Japanese girls.
(Click on the above map or here to enlarge.)

Kabukicho (East Shinjuku) is known as the red-light district and playground for host clubs. Tokyo’s Goth / Industrial / Alternative nightlife is concentrated in Shinjuku.

Color key to the map above
PURPLE: Goth / Industrial / Alternative / Cyber / EBM / Fetish clubs, parties, bars.
BLUE: Theme restaurants, cheap sushi, and other favorite places to eat. (And convenience stores are great for cheap alcohol and snacks.)
GREEN: Gothic Lolita Punk Rock clothing stores, dollar stores and other places to buy goodies. View my Alt Goth Tokyo Shopping Guide for detailed directions and photos.

In 2008-9, I plotted the main Tokyo Gothic club venues on a Google Map here. (Some of these locations are outdated; it’s best to use the map above.)

General info about Tokyo & Osaka Goth/alternative/fetish clubs and bars. Most of the parties begin around 11pm or midnight, and run all night (the trains stop running between 1:30-5am approximately). Club admission prices vary, but are generally $20-30 US including one drink (and you may receive a discount if you RSVP in advance or abide by the dress code). Bars will sometimes have cover charges of about $5, but many have no extra fees. The DJs and guests are extremely friendly and open; the only exceptions are the obnoxious gaijin who are only looking for girls and make no effort to dress up… go home, losers!

Club Marz, Tokyo nightclub in Shinjuku. Midnight Mess club night, Tokyo Dark Castle, Midnight Necropolis with DJ Taiki, Sisen, Chihiro.

CLUB MARZ
Address: B1F Dai-ichi Tokiwa Bldg., Kabukicho 2-45-1, Shinjuku
Tel: 03-3202-8248

The most popular Goth/Cyber event venue. Midnight Mess, Tokyo Dark Castle and (Osaka-based) Midnight Necropolis take place here; DJ Chihiro, Mistress Maya, DJ SiSEN and Selia often play. Two floors, two bars, and a large performance area. (For full details on Midnight Mess in video format, read this post. Dec 2014 update – this party now only happens occasionally, at various locations, especially the week before Halloween).

Midnight Mess is the longest-running Goth/Industrial party in Tokyo. There is always a fantastic turn-out of young Goths and Lolitas in amazing outfits. The performers include opera singers, dancers, S&M shows… above and here is a video with everything you know to have a spooky time! Generally the price is 2500 yen (Gothic dress code); 3000 yen with RSVP, 3500 yen (door). Drink ticket included. AGE: 18 to enter, 20 to booze.

SHINJUKU MOTION is to the immediate left of Club Marz (see above right map). Take the elevator up to see Goth/industrial/experimental bands, such as the Demonoid 13 party (click for review and video). You can see Goth nightlife fashion here. Kenzo-A, the Rituals Gothic fashion designer, has a new monthly Goth music event called The Head Shop at Shinjuku Motion. (Dec 2014 update: there are still often punk, Goth and indie bands performing here. Check the Motion website for listings.)

I photographed both venues for my theme restaurants book! Tokyo Decadance (DJ Sisen, Chihiro) and the annual Fetish Ball used to take place at the Shibuya location, which is smaller, darker and more cavernous. The huge Shinjuku venue that looks like a flamboyant Catholic church. Tokyo Decadance’s largest events (Halloween, Xmas) take place here. There are photo booths, fortune telling, and craft stands selling Goth and Lolita goods. You can see more photos here (I did a Food Network TV shoot here).

DECADANCE BAR used to be upstairs from Christon Cafe (on the 9th floor). It’s now moved to DecabarZ (new address) 歌舞伎町1-2-13, Shinjuku-ku0. For a sense of what goes on at this club, see my report from the old Decadance location. This bar is open almost every day, and attracts a colorful alt crowd. It’s staffed by Adrien, SiSEN and other colorful Decadance regulars. Come any night of the week — there’s Goth / electro / house music, food, absinthe and stuffed toys everywhere.

** If you are in Tokyo and there aren’t any monthly parties going on, don’t despair. Deca Bar Z is always open, and has theme nights.

A nice venue on an upper floor of a modern building. Follow the map carefully, as it can be difficult to find – you need to walk about 12 minutes to get there. Studio Cube hosts Alamode Night and Club Theatric from D’s Valentine’s Artism. Frequent performances by DJ Chihiro and Sisen, the Dark Marchen, Akira Death. You’ll see lots of cosplay, cyber and Lolita outfits.

It’s a little hard to find this venue because it’s hidden in the recess of a wall. If you’re walking from Shinjuku Station, it will be on the right side of the street; look out for the AM/PM! Here’s a video I shot outside Club Hoop that will help guide you. ** Events don’t usually take place here any more.

Club Cemetery (all-Goth, amazing music), Gothic Bar Heaven and other D’s Valentine nights take place here. The back room is filled with stands where you can buy Gothic & Lolita accessories, fake nails, etc. NOTE: the Goth parties have moved to different locations after 2008. This night is no longer happening.

CLUB CRAWL

Another venue for DJ Sisen and Chihiro’s Gothic Bar Heaven, Club Theatric and Alamode Night. Take the East exit of JR Shibuya station and turn right on Meiji Dori. Keep walking along Meiji Dori (towards Ebisu) for a few minutes and pass the Life Supermarket. Then take the next left and Club Crawl is on the left in the basement of Maruhashi Building, opposite an AM/PM convenience store. (Dec 2014 update – see above for the more recent parties) ** Events don’t usually take place here any more.

TOKYO ABSINTHE, FETISH & VISUAL KEI JROCK BARS – Oh, how we adore the green fairy. Below are favorite hangouts of J-rockers and spooky kids.

Bar Tram is northwest of Ebisu Station. Look for a giant stuffed raven and empty absinthe bottles outside. The place carries over a hundred varieties of absinthe from all over the world.
Photos from a night at Bar Tram
More fun at Bar Tram in Ebisu
Bar Zin in Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku is a Visual Kei / J-rock bar. Dir en Grey and X Japan left memorabilia on the walls next to skulls, a devil mask, bondage goods, a giant axe, and stuffed Jack Skellington and Sally dolls.
Another absinthe bar: Bar Breadline in Renkon/Hasune (a short subway ride from Sugamo).
Gellonimo is a Visual Kei bar in Shinjuku.
Star Cafe is another small Jrock / Visual Kei bar in Kabukicho, Shinjuku (near Club Marz)
† Decadance Bar also serves absinthe. It’s located above Christon Cafe Shinjuku, 9th floor. (Details above).
Guinea Pig is a fetish bar in Kabuki-cho, Shinjuku.
Torture Garden occurs every year or so – a fetish, play party.
There are various rock / punk music bars in Koenji, a short subway ride from Shinjuku. See photos and reports here.
† Shibuya has a drinking alley by the subway station (Hachiko exit). We did a Goth re-creation of Anthony Bourdain’s Tokyo episode of No Reservations in this post.
Kagaya is a crazy performance art bar in Shinbashi with puppets, costumes and… scandal! View our video here.

Osaka’s Black Veil always takes place at Club Neo in Shinsaibashi (the shopping district with all the Gothic Lolita Cyber Punk stores). Taiki also runs occult store Territory (see my Osaka shopping guide for details). Dec 2014 update – still the best party in town, especially the New Year’s Eve bash!

Great idea though, those places could be difficult to find without a little guidance. I hope you go to lots of events and post lots of pictures from them when you go to Japan again ;)

Oh my god! These points on google maps made my day!
I immediately added them to my plethora of Tokyo destinations, (46 places, and counting!)
Now all I have to do is convince my boyfriend to go to the clubs with me, AND let me dress him up in fitting garb. Alas, cargo pants and a t-shirt just won't fly for me.

I recently got to perform with Cevin Key. Otto and I ( Peasants With Feathers ) played at a venue called Repectable Street Cafe in West Palm Beach. This past Friday August 7th of 2009. The reason I'm writing about him is because he's living in Japan. His Dj set was unique and abrasive keeping that industrial feeling roaming in the mist well beyond our set.

    Interesting site, nice work.

    I got a question for you…

I'm a regular black-dressed guy who like to lisen and dance to Industrial/Electro. I'll be in Tokyo around 25-28 now in september. I have nothing against lolita stuff, but I can't follow that dress code and I'm not that super interested in dress shows etc.
I've only been to German-like Indu. Elect. Goth/Fetish clubs, so it would be cool to try a Japanese club =)

So do you know any clubs where I, as a non-japanese, would be welcome. And have clubnight during my stay?

    I'm thankfull for any help.

Ok, been there now and it was ok. I enjoyed the bondage show and I liked DJ Static. But the dance floor was a litle to small in my opinion.

I manage to find Maya and said hi from you as I promised. But I kept getting mixed up with the other John guy (who apparently didn’t show up… I think). So I didn’t join the after party I was invited to since I think it was more ment for him ;)

Anyway, I give it 4 thumbs up. Thanks for the advice on that one and enjoy your stay next week.

            Rock on!

    Hi,

Im heading over to Tokyo at the end of January and was wondering if you can tell me a few things…

I into the Idustrial/EBM scene in the UK but being living in Mexico for over a year now where there is very little of it!

Im going to be in Tokyo for about 5 days and i really want to go out somewhere to buy some clothes (SDL, Mercy, cyberdog type stuff) then head out for some Industrial/EBM music one night.

Can you suggest anything ? Or should i just hit some of the places in your post above?

And what sort of music is played in the clubs? Is there a lot of international english played or just japanese???

    Thanks in advance!

Ooh you’re in luck — there is a Midnight Mess on Jan 23! The info is in the club guide. RSVP to maya@midnightmess.com — let her know I sent you! ;)

The music is EBM, Industrial, dark, synth… find out more here http://midnightmess.com/ Actually, most of the music is English/Western haha. A lot of the people at the club speak English too.

As for clothes — have you seen my Shopping Guide? https://lacarmina.com/2009/04/tokyo-gothic-lolita-shopping-guide-sweet-and-goth-harajuku-stores-where-to-buy-clothes-in-japan/ All the info is here, but my favorite place to shop is Closet Child (Harajuku and Shinjuku) — since the clothes are secondhand and much cheaper!

Ok, i’ve got a question; are there the only gothic places in tokyo? I said it, because i’m loocking for something more goth and less lolita. From what i read on the blog there’s only a place in that i can enjoy goth&roll, gothic metal, or quite similars, and is in Club Walpurgis. This would not surprise me, because goth has gone from being a relief for the anxieties of obscurity to become another fad but dragged by chains of consumerism.
I’ll apreciate and thanks the answer.

Alright, I have to start somewhere. Hi! my name is Robert I’m the keyboard player from Tactical Sekt. Myself and Anthony the lead singer got into a conversation a few days ago about where we would love to play. Japan came up right away. The problem is, while we know our music is played and loved in the east. We don’t know the first step into setting up a tour in the east. If anyone knows who we need to talk to, have interesting ideas, or just want to say hi, please let us know. TS

Hi, Im trying to plan a trip to Japan form the UK for the first 2 weeks in April next year and will be spending a lot of time in Tokyo. Are there any nights likely to be on (are they the first Saturday in the month for example?) so i can plan where to be?

The parties are typically the last Saturdays of the month, but there’s always something going on, weekends!

Hi, I was wondering two things.
    1. What’s the typical age to go to clubs? There are clubs here in Texas that you only have to be 17 to get in, but idk how Tokyo is.
    2. Are there any events you’d recommend happening in December?

Hi! Exciting you’ll be in Tokyo soon.
      1) the typical age is 18 to get in, 20 to drink. However you can get drinks at the convenience store without getting ID-ed hehe.
      2) Midnight Mess, Tokyo Decadance and Department H are ongoing — usually the first and last weekends of the month have tons of events. Decadance Bar is open every night of the week.

hey there!! Currently I live in Sapporo Hokkaido but plan to move to Tokyo soon. I am into gothic and am considered to be the only foreigner in Sapporo who likes this unfortunately….as a DJ in the past, i have a personal goal to introduce industrial and goth rock into the general public in japan!! (for some reason it hasn`t really made it here yet…) what kind of music do you listen to?? are you into TBM? (the birthday Massacre) etc or do you listen to Japanese goth bands?
    get back to me!!

Hi again. Finally I am staying at Shinjuku. I have been looking for something in internet but I can not find any goth/fetish/cyber event for these days in Tokyo. Do you know any place/event to go tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. I will probably go tomorrow Friday to the Decadance Bar but I am not sure if it is a good option. If you can recomend me any place please tell me… Thankx again.

Thanks for the article. I hope it’ll be very usefull when I can go to there someday.

By the way, in some of those bars only play Japanese artists? I would like to know if some other foreign artists play, like Noisuf-X, Amduscia, etc. EBM-Industrial ratherly.

    Thank you. ^_^
