MUSIC & MOVIES: ROSE NOIRE JAPAN GOTHIC LOLITA BAND, MIYAZAKI'S PONYO, GOTH 80S DEATHWAVE PLAYLISTS.

Rose Noire gothic lolita band, egl, elegant goth aristocrat fashion and music, japanese goth bands, darkwave, Electro Psychedelic / Goth Techno / Alternative, goth industrial nightlife in Tokyo Japan

What’s floating your boat right now, in terms of music and movies? I’m digging Rose Noire, an Electro Psychedelic / Goth Techno / Alternative band I saw at Tokyo Goth night Midnight Mess.

Pretty gothic lolita couple, dating, male and female, Rose Noire gothic lolita band, egl, elegant goth aristocrat fashion and music, japanese goth bands, darkwave, Electro Psychedelic / Goth Techno / Alternative, goth industrial nightlife in Tokyo Japan

The duo is wonderful to watch: a dashing Goth Aristocrat on vocals; a doe-eyed Gothic Lolita on violin. Sebastien posted some videos of their performance here, and you can see more on the Rose Noire website.

Gothic radio playlists, goth bands, darkwave, Electro Psychedelic / Goth Techno / Alternative, goth industrial post-punk 80s music, radio streams, songlists

I’m always on the lookout for Goth/80s/postpunk/Italo Disco playlists to stream while I’m working — and Kitty Lectro is knocking my socks off with her feral mixes. It’s as if they were tailor made for my ears: Dead Kennedys, Department S, Death in June, Die Form. You can download her streams here.

Ponyo anime movie by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli, goldfish father Fujimoto, film stills from Ponyo, eating ham, mother of little boy, chick transformation weird
Ponyo anime movie by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli, goldfish father Fujimoto, film stills from Ponyo, eating ham, mother of little boy, chick transformation weird

And then there’s Studio Ghibli animation film Ponyo, recently released in theaters with an English dub. Oh mein gott. Ronan and I can’t get over the WTF exposition…

RONAN: The whole plot seemed like it was written by a five year old. An awesome five year old.
CARMINA: A drug-taking five year old.

His favorite character: the freakshow mother who needlessly endangers her son’s life and has zero reaction to the goldfish turning into a girl. Mine is Fujimoto, the goldfish’s very hot father — especially when he’s spraying himself with a “weed-killer” device to prevent himself from drying out.

RONAN: The whole movie is an acid trip! No reviewers have really done justice to how off the wall it is. Even the psychedelic pastel artstyle! I could totally see it again. It’s amazing, I was never bored for a second.

(Ponyo is also available on DVD on Amazon. You’ve got to experience the insanity!)

What films and music have you been obsessing over? I always love to hear your recommendations. You can reach me by commenting in this post or Tweeting (add me! I try to add everyone back.)

Song of the Day #194: Kitty Lectro’s dark sleazy Eurotrash Italo Disco mix is pretty sweet.

I can't wait until Ponyo comes out! As far as I can tell it's not out on DVD yet??? I can't find it on the UK amazon! Absti…nen…ses…

The band looks cool too! I love her corset not-so-modest lolita look. It's like a mixture between gothic lolita and ero-lolita, a VERY good mixture!

Deathwave? You just made that up, didn't you?

Yeah, 'Ponyo' is insane. The color scheme reminded me of the beach condos in Florida my family used to stay in when I was a kid.

The last really awesome movie I saw was probably 'Misery.'

I agree with u La Carmina!
Even from the previews only I think my favorite character will be Fujimoto!
I shall check out Rose Noire.
They seem to have a good mix of music generes.

I've been on a huge David Bowie kick lately, had almost forgot how completely awesome the video for “Ashes to Ashes” is (really, I think people should cosplay it). IAMX has been burning up my iTunes lately. Also, I really recommend Jill Tracy, she has a gothic, silent film sensibility that I absolutely love. I'm really into a (very) new band called Twisted Wires that's kind of like '80s 4AD stuff (Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil) with a techno edge.
Not really watching much in the way of movies lately. I did (finally) see Beowolf last night and loved it. I've been rewatching The Venuture Bros DVDs, since season four starts soon. There's this one episode with David Bowie, Klaus Nomi and Iggy Pop as villains that blows my mind, but you'll have to watch the whole series for it to make total sense.

I've been playing the Bollywood version of Let's Dance over and over. Bowie should totally have voiced the character of Ponyo's madcap wizard dad! I'll have to check out Jill Tracy and IAMX. Ahaha Beowolf made me laugh SO HARD when I saw it!

I have been on the fence about Ponyo. I sort of want to see it in the theaters, but just because it's Miyazaki. And that may be an empty reason to see a film… Because “so and so directed it!”. Though, if I would ever say that about a film, it would one of his films. So I've already added it to my Netflix queue and will probably just watch it at home.

As for films I am currently watching. Just got back from watching Ozu's Tokyo Story in a theater here in nyc. Really sweet film, about family and loss. And Just got Seven Samurai from Netflix. Also, I'm looking forward to seeing Millennium Actress soon too. Looks really beautiful.

Music… Hmm. The last day or so, it's been The Beatles. But other than that… A lot of Bjork, Justice, Paul Simon, English Beat… And some Halcali thrown in to keep me awake.

I wonder how the Japanese voices sound… I bet Fujimoto is better voiced. Liam Neeson wasn't a good fit for the madman wizard.

I saw Tokyo Story — a little slow but so sweet, the old folks! Ohayo by Ozu is also a great film.

I always turn the English dubs off on Miyazaki films. I know they mean well, but hiring hollywood actors brings too much vocal/psychological baggage (or they just might not fit the the character). I tried watching Mononoke Hime once in English. Never again.

    I'll check out Ohayo. Thanks!

Rose Noire looks nice, have to find out the sound…
Current musical obsessions – Kirlian Camera, VNV Nation and, strangely enough, Blood Axis. The whole neoclassical/neofolk/martial industrial genre is fascinating for a history student.

The male of the duo looks a bit like Marilyn Manson in that shot of them on the couch.
I shall have to check them out and see what they're all about. :D

Ponyo looks adorable! I went straight to Amazon and made it the first thing on my Christmas List. x3

I was recently obsessed with 80's music, especially The Cure, David Bowie, AC/DC and A Flock of Seagulls. As for movies, I hardly watch them but I love ones from around the time black and white with sound and the first colored pictures were coming out. I don't have any suggestions for movies but you should definitely check out Walt Disney's Zorro television series from the late 50's.

Mononoke Hime is my favorite, but second place is a jumble between Totoro, Porco Rosso and Spirited Away.

Porco Rosso is rarely talked about in America unfortunately, but it's really classic Miyazaki. A really great film. :) Totally recommend it!
