TIM BURTON RETROSPECTIVE AT NYC MUSEUM OF MODERN ART. EXHIBIT OF GOTH DRAWINGS, COSTUMES FROM EDWARD SCISSORHANDS DIRECTOR.

Mark your calendars: on Friday, Akumu Ink and I will unveil our fashion collaboration! There’s something for both guys and gals, and everything is super-spooky-cute and affordable — promise. (Here, I’m wearing my Dubarry coat from the previous collection.)

alice in wonderland white rabbit watch, putumayo, harajuku gothic lolita accessories, purple long military coat, La Carmina, soy luck club cafe, Tim Burton exhibit at MoMA, museum of modern art, burton film movie retrospective, drawings by director, goth filmmaker, costumes and storyboards from Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Mars Attacks!, Ed Wood, and Beetlejuice

If I only could attend one NYC event this month, it would be the Tim Burton retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art. Burton is one of my favorite directors; the Gothic humor and imagination behind Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride and Beetlejuice profoundly influenced my work. Tips: reserve your $20 tickets well in advance (many dates are sold out; luckily, I had four press passes). You’re not allowed to bring backpacks or large bags, so leave them behind unless you want to wait in line at the coat check. The exhibit will always be crowded, but there will be more space to breathe in the late afternoon.

I was surprised at the expanse of the show, which begins with his childhood years and goes right up to concept drawings of the Queen of Hearts for the upcoming Alice in Wonderland film. I felt I was in Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory — too much candied goodness to see, and too many oompa-loompas invading my space! My favorites: Nightmare Before Xmas reindeers etched with correction fluid. Napoleon-like ghouls sketched on the backside of a cereal box. Silhouettes of the dead and living characters from Corpse Bride. The full Edward Scissorhands bondage suit; the white mohair sweater from Ed Wood.

The MoMA exhibit has storyboards, sketches and other memorabilia from all of Burton’s films; I forgot that Burton made Stainboy, Mars Attacks! and Batman. I enjoyed the pieces from his private collection (caricatures of friends, sad-faced dogs). Everything on display was slightly strange and spooky, such a hyper-color video he made about an Asian Hansel and Gretel.

Tim Burton special exhibit at MoMA, tickets and reservations, special collection new york, NYC museum of modern art, burton film movie retrospective, rare line drawings by director, goth filmmaker, costumes and storyboards from Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Mars Attacks!, Ed Wood, and Beetlejuice

I left feeling exhausted from the crowds, but inspired by Tim Burton’s dark, out-of-this-world imagination. Go see the MoMA exhibit before April 26th. Your creative (Beetle)juices will flow. (Thanks to Shichi for the photos.)

Song of the Day #283: Corpse Bride – According To Plan (One of my favorite Burton films.)

Hi! I went around 2pm. True, it closes at 5:30 — I’d check the site to find out when it closes each day. It will be crowded no matter what… hard to walk around and see the paintings… but worth the visit!

The Tim Burton exhibit was quite nice and inspiring. I would also encourage everyone that’s gonna make a stop in NYC before April 26th to go.

It was pretty crowded even though it was a Monday afternoon ~_~ I liked the dark esophagus entrance which then throws you into this brightly lit space of imagination. The exhibit did go chronologically from left to right but I somehow ended up circling the space against the crowd (from right to left), starting with the latest works to the earliest… and I actually liked it that way. There were a bunch of beautiful drawings/sketches that made me jealous, same with the character sculptures. I stared at the Edward Schissorhands suit for a while while listening to the security woman yell “No pictures allowed!”. The Catwoman suit looked like it was melting off the display though, heh. The Hansel and Gretel short movie was ridiculous… ridiculously funny, and a most welcomed rest spot in the middle of it all (and that wall clock, it was screaming ‘build me!’, heh). And that sketch with the man that shot the constipated dog – so witty lol. Then I slowly got into what I think I enjoyed the most, the earlier years… sketches, reading notes – that really made me think “ah~, this is a regular person like me… but with a different style and slightly more obsessed with things” lol. The early years spoke to me a lot more maybe because it felt a lot more personal. All in all I really enjoyed everything. Before exiting I remarked: “someone’s pretty obsessed with clowns :) “.

Then at the end, when you exit, you’re thrown into these modern art huge prints that will make you go “wth, where am I?” just because you’ve spent so many hours with Burton’s creations that nothing else will fit into your brain.

But wait, there was a bit more, the movie posters and polaroid project located at the Theater galleries downstairs. They all looked so lonely. Then it was 5:30pm and the spell was over.

It really was a lot to process. I’d probably want to go see it all again.
