Happy Valentines Day and Lunar New Year from the Adventure Team! Thanks to everyone who came to our Jpop purikura party last night — absolutely loved your outfits and dancing Lady Gaga with you. Photos to come, of course.

Tavuchi, the green-haired queen of Spank! clothing stores in Tokyo, kindly gave me permission to post some party photos from her MySpace. I think the shop motto says it all: “So cute! Hug me! Love me! Spank me!”

The Spank! shop girls love the 1980s. They’re not only inspired by Cyndi Lauper’s style, but also her “girls just want to have fun” attitude.

Spank! throws candy-cute pop-and-lovery parties, which I must check out for myself when I’m in Tokyo this May. (Co-hosting the Canal Plus documentary with Antoine de Caunes, if you forgot… pas de vacances pour moi…)

I’ve only bought one item from Spank! so far — a black velvet Alice in Wonderland hairband with a big bow in the center, from Marui One. The stores, however, are a must-visit just for the experience… talk about stepping into Jem and the Hologram’s boudoir.

Tavuchi (center, in the green hair) has been getting a lot of attention recently from street style blogs. There’s an entire Tumblr dedicated to her outfit photos, and you can also stalk her on Lookbook.

I confess I’m a sucker for fairy kei fashion. I’ve done many posts about it on this blog; to read more, search for “fairy kei” (on the right sidebar search box). Or click on the Related Posts underneath this post (click on Comments or the post title, then scroll down.) How about you: fairy kei, yay or nay?

Yay! on Fairy Kei. The over-the-top childhood pastel rainbow, cotton-candy dreams is portrays are addicting. I’d wear a slightly toned-down version of it, though.

A total yay for fairy kei!! I really love the pastel colors, tutus, big hair bows, and the overall 1980’s gal look. It was even the first thing I posted about on my blog.

I love LOOKING at fairy kei, but it’s just not for me. There are some elements I really love, like the neon hair, but I’m pretty sure I couldn’t pull off the rest. They play a lot with volume and proportion, and my frame is better suited to the structure inherent to lolita/goth-loli (jackets, princess & empire seams).

Makes sense… I also don’t think it’s for me. Too sunny side up!

I wish I knew how to cook >_< I'm a horrible cook. My food tastes weird and the presentation is messy.
But ehm…. still as I said, fairy kei fashion… I’m going to start wearing it.. bright and happy shit ftw

Fairy Kei has some pretty fun aesthetics. It’s kind of similar to Sweet Lolita, in that a kind of kawaii culture found something it liked in a totally noncontextual culture and appropriated it. In SL’s case, it’s provincial and doll fashion of the Victorian era, and in FK’s case it’s 1980s girls’/kids’ culture. Personally, I’m not a fan, because it would feel like regression – I’ve, perhaps tragically, gotten over Rainbow Brite, and moved on, so it would just be strange to go back to that. I say onward! To my dark, egl-romantigoth-dollykei-fusion future!

I was already planning to go to the Spank! store next month when I’m there – but I didn’t know they threw parties! (Not that I have much time free). Interestingly, I believe the Spank! girls know Mademoiselle Yulia as well – who’s famous for her BLUE bob. Oh to get a pic of those two together…

I think Fairy Kei is for little girls – I’m far too old for it! I’m glad the fashion exists, cos I applaud originality, but it’s just not for me. I like your leggings btw :)
