† What do you find appealing about GL style and culture?
I love the thrill of the frills. I adore the Victorian and Baroque aspects of this style.
† What are your favorite Gothic Lolita clothing brands?
Lady Heather’s Fashions, Gloomth, Baby the Stars Shine Bright, Angelic Pretty, Innocent World, and many more… Gloomth is my new favorite shopping destination.

Tadpole, aaron stanford, directed by Gary Winick. actresses Sigourney Weaver, Bebe Neuwirth, Aaron Stanford, John Ritter, Robert Iler, and Kate Mara. coming of age comedy, Oscar teen boy falls in love with older step mom, cougars

Film of the Week #45: Tadpole (directed by Gary Winick, starring Aaron Stanford, Sigourney Weaver, Bebe Neuwirth.) Aaron Stanford’s best role remains his big-screen debut in Tadpole. Oscar Grubman is a precocious, Voltaire-quoting 15-year-old who’s in love with his stepmother, Eve. Over Thanksgiving, things get complicated when he winds up in an affair with Eve’s sultry friend — also in her 40s! The protagonist of Tadpole and Patrick Fugit in Almost Famous are two of my favorite movie males — ever. The next time you’re on Netflix or in the video store, look for both films; they’ll charm your pants off.

CNNGo.com is the most epic Asia pop culture site on the net — and I’m not just saying that because I write for them! We’ve got articles about the most creative Bangkok cocktails, Japanese convenience store taste tests, photos of Shanghai at 3am, Singapore vintage shopping guides… if you haven’t seen the CNN project yet, please check it out (all my articles are posted here).

Time for a long overdue round of “Kawaii or Ai-yah,” featuring content from CNNGo. First up, Durian Boy. That’s right: Singapore’s World Expo 2010 mascot is a “hyper cheery, super thorny and modeled after a stinky fruit.” The little boy wears red overalls emblazoned with a picture of the Merlion and wears a durian-shaped cap. Pewwww… what do you say, kawaii or ai-yah?

japanese larvae candy, sweets made from insects, insect chocolates, chocolate covered beetles, komatsuya honten, valentines bug candy, eating insects, gross food weird sweets

Let’s move on to sweets made from insects. “Komatsuya Honten, a bakery and confectionery shop located in Akita Prefecture, debuted a series of cakes and candies modeled on the larval and adult forms of the rhinoceros beetle.” Would you squeal kawaii and take a bite? Or run away screaming ai-yah?

Finally, CNNGo wrote about Kirsten Dunst’s Akihabara Majokko Princess PV shoot. “Piling cliché upon cliché, director McG, artist Takashi Murakami and the actress team up for a music video of the Vapors’ classic Turning Japanese.” Kirsten Dunst dancing around in a skimpy Sailor Moon-type dress and blue wig: kawaii or ai-yah?

Tadpole reminds me of my friend. He likes his stepsister who is 7 years older than him. Hmm, quite disturbing somehow. Kawaii for both Durian Boy and Insect confectionaries. :D I would like one of those cockroaches to scare my aunt, she’s terribly afraid of them.

Hahah if I left out one of those cockroaches for my Hong Kong relatives, they’d grab a slipper and SMASH it to smithereens :P

Durian Boy is kawaii! (Let’s hope he took a bath first.)

Edible Insects: It would take me a while to work up the courage to eat one, but after that they would be a great addition to school lunches ;) (I don’t think I can call them kawaii or ai-yah… Maybe just awesome?)

Kirsten Dunst: Ai-yah… that was painful to watch. It would be better if she did something besides hop around like a ditz.

Cute but stinky… like my cat! (Just kidding…)
I used to put edible flowers in my salad to weird out my school classmates. I guess insects would achieve the same purpose.

Those cakes look epic! Although when I first saw the image of the beetle I thought it was made of plastic.

They’re very well crafted, as Japanese confectionery tends to be. Impressive work.

Durian Boy is kawaii. I still don’t dare to try it (my mother sent once made my brother go outside to his durian chips because apparently they smelled bad).

The larva sweets look too icky for me, but if I could get past the idea of eating a bug, I would try the adult beetle. If anything, it makes a pretty-looking gift.

I agree that the Kirsten Dunst video is laden with cliches, but I give them props for bringing in Takashi Murakami. It doesn’t quite excuse the singing though.

It’s nice to see some older gothlolis featured since not all of us are under 22 :) I’m not so much lolita, as I am goth. However, I still appreciate look at everyone’s individual styles.

..So many things to comment on! First congrads to Gwen for being Loli of the week and her amazing outfits!

Tadpole seems pretty interesting, and what 15 year old doesn’t quote Voltaire? XD. Reminds me of a few friends hitting on other friends moms, but never their own stepmom (at least to my knowledge), nor ever leading to an affair ( hence songs like “Stacey’s Mom”).

I’d certainly eat the Rhino Beetle, larva and adult shaped candies. Its like Gummy Worms, or other candies, except Rhino Bettles have a much cooler shape.

I wasn’t sure about the Dunst video until I saw the finished version! I doubt it will be one I re-watch or an all time classic, but I thought it was pretty cute with all the cliches and different street styles. I think they could have updated their pop culture references though, Sailor Moon style outfit while classic is a bit dated, a Scream mask extremely dated, why not have the people in masks wearing Japanese movie monster masks or costumes? Then again the Vapors music video was extremely dated showing only Samurai, Geishas and Nikon Cameras.

haha I think you’d like Tadpole — it’s a poignant film, but very funny and dark!

Yeah… it’s sort of an updated Japan pop cliche video… haha. Not sure I like it.
