Oh my Satan. While in Osaka, Yukiro and I tried to visit DJ Taiki’s occult shop, Territory. Inside, there are antiques, silver skull jewelry, tarot cards, witchcraft goodies and fetuses in jars. Unfortunately, we arrived a tad too late, and the iron gates were clamped…

Fortunately, we were able to party with DJ Taiki at his Black Veil anniversary ball… a crazy night involving KISS makeup! You can see more dark fashion photos in this post. Don’t forget to watch my video that caused a bit of scandal.

Since we’re in remembrance mode, here are the last of the Dutch Pepsi photos. Naomi and I arranged for the TV crew to film at Kera Shop Arena, on the top floor of Marui One Shinjuku. We asked our spookiest friends to come along.

We dressed up Bo in Gothic fashion, and interviewed Kenzo-A about his designs. He showed her his brand, Rituals, which is sold at Kera Shop.

She asked him some… strange questions!

If you missed it, you can see a video from the Dutch Pepsi TV show above and on YouTube (I’m now a partner, yay!)

Well, speaking as a pagan, satanism has been given a bad rap thanks to Hollywood and crazy evangelicals. I’ve met several satanists, and they’re like everyone else–human beings. They may or may not have a penchant for gothic style. They don’t conduct bloody rituals–that’s strictly sensationalist crap.

I’ve read some of LaVey’s works and they’re… food for thought, certainly…

    Hey Carmina, cool post.

I was just wondering, do you have a video of the dutch-pepsi interview with Kenzo-A?
I would love to see it!

my opinion on black magic is this – I don’t believe in it, but I wouldn’t mess with a practitioner either (same as w/ voodoo)

When I was younger I used to be very good with tarot cards and I was really into the occult. Not black magic off course. In my opinion the occult should be viewed and practised with respect. As it is a religion for its practitioners. And I think religions should be viewed with respect too. Just like when you walk into a beautiful cathedral in Europe, you stay quiet in respect for the religious. I liked the occult because for me it was (is?) all about being concious about how you live with the life directly around you. Now I’m older I kinda lost this view. Currently I’m in need of a different view I guess…
In my town there is this little shop that has lots of occult stuff like tarot cards, herbs and lots of Santeria herbal baths and (angelic???) candles. It’s a nice shop and looks pretty with writing on the wooden floor, authentic cabinets and a beautiful fantasy-like tree in the middle.

PS: Would you like translation of the things Bo says in Dutch? I could translate for you. (I’m not a professional translator though…)

I was more fascinated with occult / tarot when I was younger, as well. I wonder why this interest seems to taper off when one “grows up”…

I’ll be visiting the Alice inspired tea shops here in NYC this weekend. Judging by the photos of the NYC place vs the video of the Tokyo one they have a very different take on it (and I like the Japanese better). The New York ones are very family and little kid friendly, by the looks of it the waitresses don’t dress as Alice but we’ll be checking them out anyway.

Witchcraft has nothing to do with Satan. Japan’s view of “occult”オカルト is mostly a result of anime, video games, and pop culture. I’m a practicing Witch and I assure you that no (smart) Witch will touch black magick because we tend believe in karma, and doing bad things to people comes back to you.

Not so knowledgeable about witchy stuff, but I adore esoteric symbology. My mother actually just found out that my great grandad was a freemason. Whee.

well not all witches are wiccans and some do practice black magic.. one musn’t generalize from ones own personal beliefs. Anyways that store looks so cool!! La Carmina, if I ever go to Japan I am so going when you are there. You know all the fun places.

It’s true that not all witches are Wiccans, and witch can refer to practitioners of some indigenous magical disciplines (almost none of which is well-documented and verified, though Icelandic witchcraft is), but generally speaking in today’s parlance, in almost all cases witchcraft is the magical discipline practiced by Wiccans. Historically witchcraft was generally a made-up set of practices used to accuse people of witchcraft and have them tortured and/or killed by inquisitors, which is why witchcraft is associated with Satan by some people even today. Regardless of whether or not you agree (I’m not going to spam up La Carmina’s wall any further, but I’ve written essays on the topic), it’s pretty undeniable that Japan’s prevalent view of “occult” is a big mishmash of imagery from media, pop culture mysticism, and folk superstition.

yes plus magic just is, it is neither good or bad just the practitioner. Plus There are some people who classify themselves as witches who do worship Satan. I do agree with you though Jason Japan is influence by anime etc…just look at the cute tarot cards that have anime characters

I’ve heard of people who call themselves witches and also worship Satan as well, but I’m not quite sure what about their practice is related to witchcraft since I’ve never talked to one. It also depends on what their view of Satan is, sometimes people who revere or worship Satan don’t mean the Christian Devil. Well, I’d say it’s a generally accepted idea that whether magic is black, white, or something in between depends on the intention behind it and the thing you are trying to influence. Magic that is intended to have a negative or free will-depriving effect on another being such as bindings, hexes, changing someone’s emotions or thoughts, and so forth are considered black magic. It’s more about the intention than the method. That’s the opinion I’ve most commonly encountered and personally agree with, anyway.
