    The Witch *in Hansel and Gretel*

    She is a character of which none can relate to *or just dosen't want to admit it* She also makes the dark tone of the story.

    I like the way she is perceived having a house made of ginger bread and sugary treats made of human, because in my opinion that is the way I would sometimes symbolize our society to be, an innocent killer...
  • i don't think the prize would fit me either. just entering to share my favourite villain at the moment -sweeney todd.

    he was/is a barber who is skilled in offering a very clean shave. sweeney helps mrs. lovett make those delicious meatpies the whole town loves.

    his villainy is creatively innovative and productive -leaving nothing to waste. his actions are quite ahead of its time in terms of living 'green' and being self-sufficient while using the social and political systems (of the time) to provide for his personal cause. while he does make mistakes, nobody is perfect. he put colour of red in a world where there was none.
  • Did you like Tim Burton's version of Sweeney Todd? Sondheim's music made it come together, I think.

    I recently saw an episode of Alton Brown's Good Eats that spoofed the story (and showed viewers how to make mincemeat pies). One of the funniest things I've seen on TV in a while!
  • while there is a distinctive stylistic signature that is tim burton, it's a newer interpretation which i love as well.

    i had a craving for meat pies that i made a few trips to tudor house (a local british import foods) because of it. i also picked up a few crumpets & tea while there as well.

    i haven't seen that episode but i'll be sure to keep an eye out for that one. alton brown's good eatz is very entertaining. the carribean episodes were great too.

    there was a panini bread episode was a bit over the top, however -after all that preparation he had a starving kid with him. he told the kid he must leave the sandwich wrapped in the fridge for the flavours to meld for at least 45 min just right before they could eat it! i found that absurdly funny for some reason.

    I've always loved fairy tales! I love the way that all stories and nursery rhymes have this good v evil plot and it always makes me think that it explores the light and dark side of the human psyche. Which is why I have to agree with a previous entry and say the Queen of Hearts. Not just in American McGee's twisted tale, but also in the original sotry. I think that it underlines the main reason that children are told 'good v evil' stories in the first place, to try and highlight the right thing to do from the wrong thing. But the Queen of Hearts isn't really evil, she just gets the right thing and the wrong thing confused, and as the enitre adventure leaves you wondering whether Alice just dremed it all, maybe she really is just Alic'e dark side coming out...

    my favorite fairytale villain is The Pied Piper of Hamelin.
    he gets his revenge on the people of Hamelin by luring its children into a cave to never be found...how? by the means of his musical pipe!! unlike most villains The Pied Piper is no show off and the disappearance of the children remained a mystery AND he was never caught! haw haw haw

    My favorite story book and fairytale villain would be Rociel from 'Angel Sanctuary'. Okies, I know, he wasn't exactly a story book character, more like a manga character drawn by Kaori Yuki. However, it was the dark gothic elements and his craziness that made me fell in love with that character. He seeked love and redemption that he couldn't get... to the point of insanity and obsession. He was like Hamlet, not loved however and remembered by many as a tragic character but more of a villain who dominated most of the story events leading to the final confrontation with God. His story saddens my heart greatly and no matter how much I used to hate him as a character, he is also the most touching heart-wretching character I've ever felt tears come out of my eyes before, when he finally died. T_T

    I have always liked The Groke from Moomin, since I grew up with those books. I mean, she is so lonely and whenever she tries to befriend someone he/she runs away in fear. I guess I feel bad about her. Oh, and wherever she sits down there will be an eternal spot of ice, even in the middle of the summer, wich is good because it reminds us of the winter, wich is my favorite season.

    I'm not sure this giveway is open internationally, but anyway, I like the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood. Not sure he's qualified, but he was just smart pretending the grandma, and wasn't too smart to watch the hunter.

  • Give-aways are always wonderful...and I think I'm in love with that top. So here it goes: My favorite villain is the father from "The Maiden Without Hands". In the story he's not meant to be the villain, the real villain is the devil. However, I think that to truly be a villain, you can't do bad things because doing bad things is your nature (like the devil), you must do bad things because your heart is twisted or your will is weak. In this story, the father is an ignorant weakling who accidentally gives his daughter to the devil in exchange for wealth. He then personally chops her hands off with an axe to fulfill his "accidental" contract with the devil. After that, the daughter leaves home (probably because her dad just cut her hands off... I don't know about you, but I wouldn't want to live in that kind of home environment...). The father is never seen again in the story, although our heroine is continuously plagued by the devil. Interestingly enough, the father is the only character who falls for the devils tricks. The other minor characters that the devil tries to trick let their conscious win out and end up doing the right thing. So even in the context of a Grimm's fairytale, the father is a bad person. Besides, I have a sneaking suspicion that this part of the story is not REALLY about a man making an accidental deal with the devil.... I think it's safe to say that it's a metaphor for child abuse.
  • Oh whoa... I haven't heard of this story but it literally gave me the chills. I like your interpretation; I personally know so many people (girls, mostly) who end up in asinine and hurtful situations because they "go along" with something or "accidentally" let it happen... bollocks, hehe.

    My favorite Villian has to be Mrs Nellie Lovett from Sweeney Todd becuase, i think she's the real villian of the tale, for, she lies to Sweeney and shes the one who convinces him to murder people and let her bake them. Furthermore, she's been pushed to this mental state of lying through her love for Mr. Todd, she's a very cunning. sly yet smart character, and i tihnk all of these elements are perfect for a Villian, hope you didn't get too bored by my little paragraph.

    My favorite villain is the namesake of the classic fairy tale of Bluebeard. Now that was one twisted, violent man, who killed seven of his previous wives and kept their tortured bodies in a room only to be discovered by his 'curious' eighth wife. What nightmares this tale gave me as a child! It's even more haunting knowing that it is possible that the legend was derived from the actual case of Gilles de Rais.

    I love the bbw because he huffs and he puffs like my dog. It's comical how naive he is - trying to blow a house down made of bricks. Plus, he's a cute lil wolfey.

  • Captain Hook from Peter Pan. He's a Pirate. Need I say more? Haha. My favorite version is based off the movie "Hook" when he's played by Dustin Hoffman. I love his elaborate and immaculate ensemble and how well kept he looked contrary to most people's ideas of how pirates look. I love the idea of never growing up and Captain Hook represents the evilness of adulthood in his attempts to slay childhood. He also has some amusing antics. And did I mention he was a Pirate? :P

    I had debated between my original favourite, Mallifecent, and my current favourite (thus far, I've only just begun reading stories from the Grimm's Fairy Tales), the evil stepmother in Cinderella. The original tale is very creepy! On to the stepmother - I can admire her drive to get into that palace! She forced her daughters to cut off parts of their feet just to fit into the (in this case) golden slipper and trick the prince. They may have gotten away with it, had the birds who aided Cinderella not chanted out (in a creepy ryhme way) that there was blood in the shoe. At the end of the story, the stepmother seems to disappear from existence as the stepsisters try to get on Cinderella's good side. At the wedding, they stand next to her and then the birds pluck out their eyes! It's a rather violent story, and the ryhmes in it send chills up my spine. Never the less, the stepmother's clever enough, and has decent control over the people around her. Not bad - she seems to have made it out without losing her eyes and toes!

    It's amazing how much more violent the Grimms versions are from the Disney ones. The Evil Queen in Snow White was forced to dance on hot coals until she died. And the Mermaid... she should have slayed that flaky prince!

    Rumplestiltskin! Creepy little man who somehow has magical powers and enjoys blackmail.... definately a mean-spirited guy. But I also have to say The archetypical witch, whether it be in snow white, sleeping beauty, or the little mermaid, probably takes the cake for mean. But Rumplestiltskin is just creepy.

    as for the subject of villains.. i think my all-time favorite is Dracula, he was my first literary obsession and i subsequently have a weakness for pale tormented types dressed in black:) but if its strictly fairytale villains, then i'd have to say Angela Carter had it right, and go with the Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. Because sometimes we want to be seduced away from the path..

    My favorite fairytale villain is the queen in Snow white. I use to dress up as her when I was little. She's amazing and I think that what she does to Snow white, even if it's not really nice, comes from such a human feeling that is totally understandable - jalousy. And alos, she's cool .

    My favorite Fairytale character would have to be Belle from Beauty and the Beast. When I was little, I wore the video out soo many times from watching it so much. I think it was the way the story went. I loved how Belle was so afrade of the Beast then in the end, found true love. :3 Ima nerd hehe And my Storybook villain would have to be..The witch from Hansel and Gretel. Think about it. She lured the kids there with candy, fattened them up. And then tried to eat them. Thats evil lol <3333

    My favorite fairytale/storybook villians has to be.....Captain Hook. He has crazy pets, a weird obsession with clocks and wants revenge cause Peter cut off his hand. Forgot to mention that he has his own place with servants. HAHAHA!

    Bluebeard is my favorite fairytale villain.

    When I was younger, I had this storybook and the story of Bluebeard was there. However, my mom threw the book away because of my being so frightened by it. And that is why I like him so much, because he genuinely frightens me. Also, his is one of the few fairytales that is never "sugar coated", because if you did, there really would not be a story ^^'

    But it really was the illustrations that scared, yet fascinated me. Like the one of Bluebeard's deceased wives or of him discovering that his current wife has opened the door to the room filled with his dead wives, his face is twisted in a snarl and his current wife pleading for her life *shudders*

    Well, my idea of "villain" is not very glamorous, and it also very out there. This part can be skipped if you know the tale about the owl's clothes.

    [ My favorite fairy tale actually was a sub-story within Laurence Yep's "Child of the Owl" -- a story about how an owl maiden became a human. The maiden's "clothes" (her feathers) enabled her to become an owl, but when they were taken off, she was human. Of course, most supernatural beings would like to be clean as well, so she and many other owl maidens bathe in the lake. Beautiful beings, they were; and a wandering farmer happened to stop by, and realized that the hanging feathers on the trees made them stay in their human form. He steals one and demands that the owl maiden be his wife. ]

    The farmer, I believe, is my favorite villain. He makes me so angry -- let the girl be free, and what she wants to be! But it's such an astounding allusion to life in general, at least through my perspective. You can't blame him for being "low", but at the same time, you struggle against the fact that you have to relate to him. However, the owl maiden could also be seen as a villain, since she manages to steal her feathers back after starting a family with the guy. Go figure.

    Well one of my favorite villain from a classic storybook is the witch from Hansel and Gretel for two reasons. First, I think that alot of women suffer from "Hansel and Gretel witch syndrome" because some kids and babies are so cute you just wanna go NOMNOM (such as in pretend eating) on their little feet and cheeks. Or maybe I'm just a bit crazy lol. And, secondly, the witch creates her dream house and these two gluttonous little brat find her house and start eating everything! I think she might be a little misunderstood that witch.

    My favorite villain *thinks and ponders* now THAT'S a good question XD
    First, I thought of the Queen of Hearts, form Alice in Wonderland: the phrase "OFF WITH HER HEAD" really stuck with me, and playing Croquet with pink flamingos looked fun 8) .
    THEN I remembered Maleficent, in Sleeping Beauty. Now SHE'S a GREAT villain! She LOOKS evil, but still is beautiful (unlike some wtiches or others that are old and stinky and just plain ugly XD), she transforms into a dragon in the end (soooo coooool!!!!!), her evil laugh gives me chills (that's how much i'm scared XD, but she's awsome)... All that to say that SHE'S my favorite... The way she lured Sleeping Beauty and just how evil she is ( she wants to Kill Princess Aurora because she didn't get invited to the party XD) it's AMAIZING!

    My favourite villain (s) are the Ugly Step Sisters in Grimm's Cinderella. Mostly because I feel sorry for them. While they were ugly in personality it's not completely their fault that their overbearing mother ruins things for them, I'm sure if they had had some nice friends and things they would have turned out all right. A close second is the Queen of Hearts, since she's smashing and fashionable and pure evil. ;D Maleficent is a close second too.

    The sea witch in the Little Mermaid. She was very clever and cunning, and managed to get to the youngest mermaid and all her sisters (by trading their hair to her). She's also one of the few fairytale villains who didn't get killed/punished for what they did. That takes some skills.

    I have to say my favorite would be Cruella DeVille. Because what's more villain than being named "Cruel Devil"? ^_~ She was morbidly obsessed with fashion (I'm obsessed with morbid fashions... So it's kinda similar, right? lol)

    It was life vs. machine, and I guess the life won. It seemed cool that a it didn't really have to be alive to be a villain.

  • I did! I think because of Vancouver's large Asian population, my school incorporated a lot of Chinese New Years celebrations, stories and such. Back then, I never thought of it as life vs machine... very insightful.

    Hmmm... I have to say that my favorite villain in a story was the stepmother from the Juniper Tree. She kills her stepson by lopping his head off with the lid of a trunk that held apples, then tied it back on his body with a handkerchief and propped the body up with an apple in his hand, before convincing his half-sister to box him in the ear for not giving her the apple. Then, when she had traumatized her daughter enough, she cut him up and made him into a black stew for her husband, the boy's father, and said that the little boy had gone to visit his uncle. She was killed by a millstone being dropped on her head.

    Little Red Riding Hood is my favorite story book. Beside the 'don't talk to strangers' message, she was the first story I knew from the Brothers Grimm (I found out later about them).

    So ne way my fav villian was always the witch in hansel and gretal I mean come on who wouldn't love lady with a house made of sweets, even if she does it little children. The other day though i read rumpletiltskin all the way through for the first time ever. Now I think rumpletiltskin is my new favourite fairy tale villian, I didn't no the stroy very well and always thought he was the good guy but now i relise what a little shit he is. I think it's great how you start of thinking awww what a sweet little man turning the straw into gold for the little girl until he decides his gonna steal her baby. I think his character ads a nice twist to a story that would otherwise be a pretty ordinary fairy tale. So any way that is why i've now come to the conclusion that rumpletiltskin is my favourite fairy tale villian

    My favorite villain has to be Ursula from Disney's Little Mermaid. Why? Because she was loud, obnoxious and ugly, but was proud of it. She is also a sorceress/witch and that's pretty cool & part octopus...I like octopuses! <3 :D

    My favorite villian would have to be the evil fairy from sleeping beauty, Maleficent. Not only does her name sound evil but she turns into a dragon! If you were evil, wouldnt you want to turn into a big evil dragon too? Not often do you get to hear about evil fairies either! The love story was enchanting and even though she was scary, I though Maleficent was also pretty in her own bewitching and evil way :]

    I have always loved Smee from Peter Pan the play, the Disney version, and the novel Peter and Wendy. Maybe because I'm Irish and like a man who "stabbed without offense." As a small child I wanted Smee as a pet too, just like Wendy.
    Even though he was a scurvy pirate and nasty old bad guy he was endeared by the bratty children when they got caught and thrown in the brigg. Lastly, when I was 14 I went to Disneyland with family and ran up to "Smee" for a hug like I was 5.

I love it that he kidnap the Santa Claus (Ed Ivory) and hijack all his little elf helpers and replace them with his band of ghouls and goblins to deliver his own variation on Christmas. How i wished this would happen on christmas!!! oh, and i want to be the santa claus so jack skellington would kidnap me!!!!

    Favourite fairytale villain: Malifecent. She completely exudes the regal yet chilling air that every proper villain should have. ^.^ She's also one of the most cruel, to curse a baby in front of her parents. For a mother, such a thing could be worse than death.

Why did he steal first born children, what use has he for a baby? And of course, the name thing. The story manages to be weird and terrifying all at the same time, and for that, Rumplstiltskin is my favourite story book villain.

    My favorite fairy tale hero is the selchies from fairy tales. I don't know if they can be counted on as a hero or are more anti-hero, because tails with them are always beautifully tragic. But I've always loved the idea of a creature that can shed its seal-skins on the land and pass for a human. Also, I like that as a women, they are always captured by men but find a clever way to escape and take their skins back to return to the sea.

    Hmm favorite villain is a tough one! My favorite story in which I feel qualifies as a fairytale or storybook is Picture of Dorian Gray. I think Dorian Gray becomes a great villain to himself and others. It really makes the point that beauty isn't just something you have on the outside. If you only care about beauty on the outside then what is left of you on the inside? He became a very ugly person...or his portrait showed how ugly he really became once he sold his soul for eternal beauty.

    Villian: Alice. Running away from home, going strange places with strangers and substance abuse do not a good loli make! She is not a role model. Her tale serves as an allegory describing what is wrong with today's youth.

    I also think wonderland would have been better off if she hadn't interfered with their local affairs. Meddling with a foreign government because it doesn't match a particular ideal set shows intolerance to other cultures and perpetuates institutionalized racism.
  • My choice is the Snow Queen, from the fairytale of the same name. She was elegant, powerful and in some contemporary retellings (see the _Snow White, Blood Red_ series of anthologies) a bit of a Domme. ^_~ Her motivations seemed very mysterious, which I like.

  • My favorite villain? Odd as it might sound, it would have to the Beast from Beauty and the Beast. I know in the end he turns out to be a sympathetic character, but when you first meet him he as far from "sympathetic" as could be imagined. I always found him fascinating, even as a child, for his terrifying, dangerous side, and for the captive, tortured side of him trying to get out.

    Runner up would have to be the Snow Queen though... Beautiful, deceptive, utterly graceful and glamorous and the embodiment of one of my favorite seasons.

    My Favorite Villan would be the Odile from Swan Lake o-o I actually feel sad for Odile because she looks so much like the Odette and she pretended to be Odette because of her father. But no only, she wants the prince too for herself. It all started with her father but somehow, she became the villan instead, which was a sad thing. In the end, no one really had a prefect ending.

    My favorite villain is one that is often forgotten, the pea, from the Princess and the Pea. I like the pea because it has stopped every single fake princess single handed, but in the end it is because of the pea that the Princess is able to marry the Prince. It is because of the kind twist that I admire the silent deeds of this humble villain.

    My favorite villain would definitely be the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid. The version that I used to read as a child portrayed her as a withered, wispy old woman, wise and cunning. Disney's Ursula is faaaaaaabulous and strong and bold, and just exploding with personality when most Disney characters are relatively two-dimensional. But the original Hans Christian Anderson version doesn't necessarily paint the witch as an evil being, but just as one who happened to be the mermaid's means of transformation. She even warned the mermaid of the dangers, but the mermaid, being a silly 16-year-old, didn't care. I think the witch actually got the short end of the stick.

    I like Baba Yaga, I think she's quite powerful and scary. Usually portrayed as a really strong witch and referenced in many works, like gingerbread houses, chicken legged homes, queen of the witches, or even one who replenishes her power by sacrificing infants.

  • My favourite storybook Villain is Princess Langwidere in Ozma of Oz, in the film Return to Oz, with Fairuza Balk, she is called Princess Mombi. The thirty interchangeable heads that she has are terrifying! She imprisons Dorothy because she wants to take her head and add it to her collection. She spends all day admiring herself in front of a mirror and the heads can all talk, in the movie, they rat out Dorothy when she escapes by screaming her name.

    Needless to say, I was haunted by this as a child. More like traumatized!

  • Rumplestiltskin is the villian that sticks in my mind most from fairy tales. I'm not sure why but probably due in part to the illustrations of Arthur Rackham. The illustrations make such a difference with such tales which is why I am loving Lang's work so much.
  • One of my favourite fairytales is the little mermaid. And of course my favourite villain would be the evil octopus seawitch Ursula! I was amazed as a little girl when I red the book (disney's version). I don't know why I like her so much cus normally i think octopuses are the most creepy thing on earth, but she's just awesome. The way she paint her lips, the way she keeps her hair. The way she moves her purple and big body. And of course her collection of slaves. Shes just so evil tricking deperate human beings into the impossible task. And the way she rises as a queen with the crown on her head... woooaaahhh!!!

Sounds silly but the swans put him through so much because they didn't understand him and he didn't conform to their "standard of beauty" The ugly duckling is like being a western lolita...     My favourite "villains" are Belle's sisters in "Beauty and the Beast"--particularly the one who asks for jewelry.

    It's unfair that the youngest child is so favoured in fairytales. Why should the older girl be less beloved just because she asked their rich merchant father for jewels? In those days, a fresh rose could have been more difficult to find and bring back than jewelry, which is available all over the world. Jewelry also does not need to be torn from innocent plants.

    Even if Belle asked for a rose to make it easy for their father, it is her request that gets them in trouble with the Beast. Fine jewelry and clothing harm no one, and are far longer lasting.

    Hmm...I would have to say that my favorite villain is the Queen from Snow White. I've liked her for around 13 years because she was the first villain i ever encountered in my childhood and I thought she was awesome. She's the epitome of evil to me because, she betrays someone who loves her because she wants to be the most beautiful person in all the land. She reminds me of a lot of celebrity women nowadays. She also has some dynamic plans for getting her goal. I would have never though about a poison apple, let alone how to get Snow White to EAT that poison apple. I did think that her goal of being the most beautiful was really superficial BUT she learned from her mistakes in her planning and I think that was really good on her part because she should not have to live her life dwelling on the fact that she lost, because she failed due to bad planning, and those rascally good dwarves who came to Snow White's rescue. So, I really like the Queen.

    I'd have to say my favourite baddie of all time would have to be Victor Frankestien from Mary Shelley's classic novel Frankestein. He isn't exactly bad but his reaction to his labour wasn't the greatest. His over powering guilt in playing God over rides his promise to his creature. The term Frankenstien has been used to describe something of great evil, not because of Victor granting life to a Daemon, instead it was the reaction of the created at the rejection from his creator. I think that causing such suffering onto the innocent being was the greatest cruelty Victor could have bestowed on him.

    Also, I tried commenting the night you first posted this (I like the middle of the night) but it wouldn't allow me to. I'm at school now and the computer system is pretty sweet so I'm happy I can add in my two cents worth in =D

    My favourite fairytale/storybook villains are probably nymphs or sirens who lure men into deaths or other stuff. Like Kirke from the Odyssé who keeps Odysseus trapped on her island for aaaaaaaaaages - and when he finally gets a chance to escape, she makes sure he visits her cave (it actually says that...) one more time before he gets to leave!

    My favorite villain has always been Captain Hook from Peter Pan, ever since I was little. He was a sharp-dresser if I do say so myself - I loved his long red coat with the gold accents, and his Tricorner hat with the plume. I was so excited when I learned of the movie "Hook." I absolutely loved that movie just because Captain Hook looked so awesome in it. But I liked how authoritative he was, and I felt sorry for him that nobody in the movie liked him. hahaha

    Although my favorite fairytale is The Little Mermaid (and I totally bought Lang Leav's book after reading this post) my favorite villain would have to be the evil fairy Maleficent in Disney's version Sleeping Beauty. You can just tell she is super hot: thin and tall and if she were a real person she would have really nice makeup done. Plus she is always looking at the mirror asking who's the hottest woman of the whole forest which should remind all girls of ourselves because we all have at least a bit of vanity in us, it's natural!!

    Favorite fairytale/story book villain would be the SWINDLERS from the "Emperor's New Clothes" - They duped the Emperor into paying them good money for clothing made of air (I don't think even Marc Jacobs can pull that off)

    Not only that, they made the Emperor so confident that he modeled the new attire to the whole Kingdom, if not for that bratty little kid (hater) he could have pulled it off. :)
