POPULAR JAPANESE CAT BLOGS: CUTE DECORATED PHOTOS OF SCOTTISH FOLD, STRAY CAT WITH TORN EAR.

Nihon is the land of Hello Kitty and Maineki Nekos – so it shouldn’t be surprising that cat blogs are popular among the Japanese! Three of the most popular kitty bloggers are Hatch-Chan (a nip-eared former stray), Umi, and Maru (a straight-eared Scottish Fold who loves to dive into boxes!).
What distinguishes these cat blogs from English ones, such as I Can Has Cheezburger and Stuff on My Cat?
1) The photos are high-quality and of only one cat (rather than casual snaps submitted by readers). They show the feline in a variety of cute outfits and settings.
2) The photos are decorated with colorful kawaii symbols – hearts, sweat drops, movement lines – and speech, which creates a type of comic strip. The effect is sweet rather than snarky.
Did someone say kawaii kitty? Sounds like a job for Basil Yuen Farrow! Inspired by the Japanese cat blogs, I’ve put together a kitty-manga starring my Scottish Fold. What do you think of the format? Would you like to see more?

Zzzz… zzzz… huh? Who’s touching my paw?

Unnngggh, I’m trying to sleep! I’m not in the mood for a tummy rub.

Purrrrr… Or am I?
