WAVE GOTIK TREFFEN MUSIC FESTIVAL: GOTHIC BANDS IN LEIPZIG GERMANY, STEAMPUNK INDUSTRIAL RIVETHEAD FASHION.

What’s up, pussycats? I’ve been poring over photos from last weekend’s Wave Gotik Treffen festival in Leipzig, Germany. Ah, if I could have flown over on a broomstick! Fortunately, several of Tokyo comrades were at the world’s largest dark music gathering and gave me the full scoop. (Photos: Sebastian Willnow, ddp).

Zoe (who you may remember from these videos) didn’t see too many Gothic Lolitas in the mix. The prevailing styles were cybergoth, heavy military (for the men) and “the rather disturbing female trend of wearing skirts so short that half your bum sticks out!” Zoe saw a few steampunk costumes, “lots of people in massive period costume ball gowns, cyber drag queens (love them!), and plenty of creativity in outfits and hair. It was amazing to see how put together people looked as they emerged from the camp ground.”

Music-wise, there’s something for everyone at Wave Gothic Treffen: neo-folk, classical, industrial, synthpop, bat cave… Long-time Tokyo resident Michael has been to the festival several times. He reports: “I was very happy with L’ame Immortelle live and surprised at how much I enjoyed Combichrist: two drummers with full drum sets making for a very powerful live EBM performance. A big high point was Peter Murphy’s midnight performance. During She’s In Parties, he blows into a keyboard recorder instrument that was downright spooky at 3am. Also good for me were Client, Frozen Plasma, Alice in Videoland, and KMFDM.”

Have you ever been to WGT? What did you think of this year’s fashion and performances? Keep the Marilyn Manson contest entries coming, and please let your spooky friends know!
