RIP PER NORDKVIST, SWEDISH GOTH STABBED & KILLED BY 5 TEENAGERS, gothic hate killing, sophie lancaster, british goth girl murdered, gothic fashion and being members of the goth subculture.

On a serious note… have you heard of the Sophie Lancaster murder, in which a UK Goth couple was attacked for the way they dressed? The sad story has repeated itself in Sweden: a Goth boy was brutally murdered by five teenagers. Last last Saturday night, Per Nordkvist was taking cash out of an ATM in Göteborg, when he was attacked by five boys between the ages of 15 and 18. Per managed to get away and jumped into a monorail, but he was stabbed badly with knives. Eight hours later, he died in the hospital.

Per didn’t know the teens who attacked him, nor did he provoke them. The Swedish media speculates that he was targeted because of his Gothic appearance. It’s frightening that such social intolerance and violence still exists towards alternative cultures; the victim could have been you or me…

You can see more about Per on a Facebook page in his memory. There are no news reports of this sad story in English, so please share this post to let others be aware.

That is really sad to read. I too went and looked for any articles in English and have come up empty handed. Frankly, there weren’t that many articles at all (from what I could tell through a goggle search) about it.

Per wasn’t goth, he was emo, but regardless of his style this is a tragic crime. The Swedish police took in five people in custody but only two of them are in detention pending trial. One of the theories behind the murder is that Pers murderers recognized him from an earlier assault. No one knows for sure what the real motif is.

That story of the Swedish guy really stirred me up. You see, I have friends in Gotheburg (some who are goths) and I was there myself awhile back. Some people seem to always find some obscure (and often misguided) excuse for harming another living being. So disturbing to hear.

Wow, that is so sad. My heart really goes out to his family and friends. Were those pictures right above the details pictures of Per? What is it about goth style that makes intolerant people so angry that they could do these things? You’re right Carmina…it could have been any one of us. My 8 year old daughter was appalled and couldn’t understand why someone would do that just because somebody wanted to be themself. How do I explain? I can’t. All I can do is show her the courage that it takes to be yourself by doing my best 2 be myself! I applaud your style and the way you bring it to the rest of the world! You rock! We send our positivity to Per’s family and hope they are able to find comfort in his strength and individuality in this time of grief

Try being both Korean and a goth after the VTech massacre. :/

I can stand taunting and stares, but it’s appalling that it isn’t legally a hate crime if someone is murdered based on their appearance, because it’s considered a changeable aspect of your personality unlike race or sex. Per Nordkvist joins Sophie Lancaster and Brian Deneke, and many more people of all subcultural affiliations still undergo verbal and physical abuse, but unlike bullying based on race or sexual affiliation, these people get relatively no attention.

At least two people got lifetime jail in the Sophie Lancaster murder, it’s terrible when criminals like these go unpunished. I don’t understand hatecrimes, why does anybody have the energy to hate somebody else SO MUCH over nothing? I think they need to go to the roots of their own problems, because completely random violence is not gonna solve their terrible childhood, or whatever happened to them.
I don’t think there’s a lot of this in Sweden at all, it could happen anywhere – and that’s the most scary part.

The prosecutors are due to file charges by March 4 (March is “Mars” in Swedish, if you look for dates in the paper), so there will likely be more information coming about the trial in a few weeks.

It angers me to see these types of crimes. Things like this happen all the time in my school! Before, I had a few gothloli, visual kei, and cybergoth friends and we made an oath to stand out of the crowd no matter what. But then, a lot of kids harassed and bullied us, and they tried to run over a friend of mine… After that, she gave up gothloli and dressed in name-brands like the other fashion slaves in my school. Pretty soon, the rest of the group followed. My loli friend still hangs out with me, but the others kept making fun of me and tried beat me up, especially the boys! Now I’m the only visual kei girl in school and everyone else is a Ambercrombie fashion zombie…

I am actually having a hard time wrapping my head around this, mostly because I was never subjected to any form of abuse because of my appearance growing up :( Hard to imagine

Sad news and hard to believe this type of prejudice still exists. My next sock monkey will be dedicated to Per and anyone facing unjust treatment because of the way they look

Now I'm the only visual kei girl in school and everyone else is a Ambercrombie fashion zombie…

Try being both Korean and a goth after the VTech massacre. :/

I can stand taunting and stares, but it's appalling that it isn't legally a hate crime if someone is murdered based on their appearance, because it's considered a changeable aspect of your personality unlike race or sex. Per Nordkvist joins Sophie Lancaster and Brian Deneke, and many more people of all subcultural affiliations still undergo verbal and physical abuse, but unlike bullying based on race or sexual affiliation, these people get relatively no attention.

Exactly – they get no attention, even though these are just as much hate crimes.
